D**n, piece of junk IBM hard drive took a dump on me this evening. I'll be tearing a 8.4 gig drive out of 1 of my turtle boxes tomorrow and install Win2K on it and see if I can recover anything on that IBM junk. I just filled out the RMA on it with IBM and got my number, so I'll be sending my 3rd 75GXP back. I think that I am going to file with that site that is doing the class action suit against them for these sorry a** 75GXP drives. I can't rely on them for anything.

Hopefully I will be able to save my Folding work on it; I was 95% finished on a GNRA Hairpin. I'm also hoping that I can save my email too.

Well, I just needed to let off a little steam, sorry for the rant.

Fold on!

I think I would have stopped after second one lol. people say ibm hd's are fast but I would rather one that actually worked. good luck on retrieving data.

I had bought 2-30 gig drives to run raid0 last year on my T-bird box(had a KK266R board when I originally bought them) and the first one went out in November. I RMA'd it and the replacement drive they sent me was defective ; wouldn't be detected on a warm boot, just a cold boot. So I called them on that drive last week and explained what was going on with the replacement drive and told them that I wanted a 60GXP as a replacement. Then, last night I was watching a DVD. I finished a movie and then went to put the F@H console back on(I didn't want the comp to dial in while watching the movie) and the comp locked up, with the drive making some swishing noises like the drive heads full-stroking continuously.

BTW, both of my drives were made in Hungary, Walter:-); I've heard that 75 GXP drives made elsewhere are a little more reliable. My advice to you is to back up your hard drive frequently and not to trust it at all. Both of my drives were about a year old when they went sour. Another thing is that it is costing me $11 each time to ship the POS back to them.

I imagine that as soon as I get an extra $100 or so, I will go ahead and buy another hard drive from Maxtor to replace this drive as my primary drive unless they do send me a 60GXP as a replacement.

I was curious about where they were made. It seems that most of the bad drives were made in Hungary. It's probably a problem at that plant. I have one made in Thailand that gave me no grief at all. It's still working great.

I did the same thing back when everyone was raving about how great those drives were. 2 75 GXP's in Raid 0 for the speed factor without having to resort to scsi. I didn't care to back up since I back up the improtant stuff to cd anyway. I have the drive that failed. It's running once again and I turned off all power saver option on it so it never stops spinning. I think that helps. It's only part of a folding rig now and will never again be trusted for anything even remotely important. I gave up on the Raid too.

Well, I finally got the T-bird back up and running now. It's funny though how slow this old Maxtor hard drive is now. I remember how fast it seemed when I got it 3 years ago because it was the first 7200 rpm hard drive that I had owned. My work production should pick up a good bit with the T-bird back in operation. I even found an old 1.2 gig hard drive that I installed in the folding box that I robbed for the T-bird box, so I should have all my rigs back running.

You are one heck of a strong individual muddocktor. I can't even begin to guess how I'd have handled that much grief. Best of luck in getting that 60gxp. They certainly owe it to you. The fact that you are not Joe Suit or Joe Sixpack doesn't help their reputation much either. I don't think any manufacturer wants to get on our bad side. We have too much of an audience when things get ridiculous.
