BUT NOTHING HAPPENED!! so i tried reinstalling powerdvd, but still to no prevail. I checked and dma was enabled on both primary and secondary ide controllers. Any ideaz of whats going on? Or is my dvd player just on compatible with winXP(since it did work b4 i upgraded to xp). Its a compaq dvd-rom dvd-115. TIA

i dont think that XP would reject your dvd player
i assume it still reads cds and the like

try some different dvd playback software and see if thats the problem
check the region code is set on you drive too

i personally use powerDVD
try and see if theres a special XP version

otherwise id recommend winDVD 2000

btw: try playing the dvd in windows media player
it supports DVD playback with XP
