I have a Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P motherboard with this controller.

I have setup two Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB drives in a RAID 1 array.

However, my Windows Experience Index for Hard Disk is only 5.9.

Does that sound right?

In Vista? Yeah, that's max. Under W7, yeah, they have higher standards for it.

ratbuddy is right the highest rating for anything in vista was 5.9 with w7 they raised the bar a bit.
However, the highest rating in W7 for a mechanical drive is 5.9...doesnt matter if you are using a raid array or not.
Now if you take a SSD in consideration it will have a windows experience index somewhere in the 7's.(I'm basing this at the access time of ssd's)

Ah ok thats cool then.

Its just I was shocked that it was a low amount, didnt realise the limit for mechanical drives, that makes me feel better :)

Not familiar with the 7200.11's, maybe they come with a jumper. Is there one plugged in somewhere near the SATA connector? If so, try removing them and running the bench again :p

Jumper to change what though?

A lot of SATA drives come with (or came with, dunno if they still do) a jumper inserted that limits the drive to SATA/150 speeds. Removing it enables full SATA/300 mode. I saw about 5% speed increase on mine by removing the jumpers.

Ah thats ok, the raid controller is seeing it as SATA 300 :)

plus you are running raid 1 which will add a bit of overhead. Your speeds look normal.
