Hello!

I have a question for anyone who is super at video. I need to get..... my video size down. I am pulling video off of something into a Mpeg1 format. And at 320x240 Resolution at 29 FPS full screen is ok. But not where I want it. And the file for this is approx 10 Meg's a sec. (VCD FORMAT) If I put in in a SVCD format Making it Mpeg2 it takes up too much. the fps is still 29 but the resolution is 480x320 I belive. And this is good, but still large in size. (I want to do DVD quality at 720x480. But im no putting 2 hours of video over 6 cd's)

Does anyone know of a good compression utility or a good protocal? (Mpeg 4 perhaps) that I can encode video in. That is a decent size. I don't have any problem taking it and putting it over 1.4 gig (2 700 mb cdr's) thats ok. But I cannot seem to find anything to suit my needs. If anyone has any suggestions im open. Thanks!

if you want dvd quality then buy a dvd:mad:

try to dl nvidias refresh rate tweaker, modifying your refresh rate can make pictures a little clearer

Im doing video editing. The idea Is I need to be able to take pieces parts of what I need to compose something. But I don't want the outcome to look ****ty. I want it to look good but not take up all my HDD space (As it is i have 3 gb left on my 40gb maxtor)

like i said, try dl a nivdia refresh rate tweaking tool, it should make your picture a little clearer, if that doesnt work then, juss try to compose your video in a difference format, avi is clear, but requires less memory:D

If I let it go in Native AVI It sould be monsterously huge.

Heres what Ive tried authoring in so far.
VCD 320x240 (Same with ASF and RM) Too low Resolution

SVCD 480x480 (or 480x320) This one is ok But the video compression is Mpeg 2. Im looking for something that Can be played anywhere.

What I think Im looking for is a Mpeg 4 Encoder. Cause the playa can be downloaded for that. Divx 4 I belive is 1-10 Megs a Min. So it would be perfect (One hour 600 mb, second hour 600 mb) But I cannot find anyone who knows about Mpeg 4 or where I can get the program/tools/addons whatever to encode in mpeg 4.

I need Really clear. If I need to present this my ability unfortunatley will not be demostrated with a pixelized screen.

First of all, they do have DVD-Rs out there now. I don't know wha their capacity is, but I'm sure its a helluva lot more than cds. It'll just cost you quite a bit for the drive (a few hundred).

As for finding better compression, check out divx. It is a hacked version of mpeg where the audio is compressed to mp3 format.

I'm not sure where you could get the software to encode it, since it is not legally supported by microsoft, but I think it would be a slightly smaller size.

If you're planning on doing a lot of video work, might I recommend an extra hard drive? I recently worked on a 20 min video that wound up taking a little over 17 gigs, including all the clips I worked off of and all the images.

There is a free mpeg2 to mpeg4 converter. THG had a bunch of articles about it, the first one is below. Xmpeg crashed a lot on my pc, I have win XP, so I gave up on it. You'll probably have better luck than I did and I think its worth looking into. The downside is it will only play on a pc that has software to decode mpeg4.

Ive got an extra 30 laying around. And I think im going to invest in another 40. Plus I know I can clear out like 20 on my existing drive.....

http://www.virtualdub.org/ I belive the program on this site will allow me to transfer my mpeg 2 video (good quality) over to Mpeg 4 and hopefully get good quality and just be able to transport it.

Umm.. What was I thinking. I know its possible. Because Ive seen some people make GREAT looking videos and they fit like 2 hours on one 700mb cd. so I should be able to make perfect videos over 2 700 mb cdr's..

oh yea dvdr's i think are 8 gigs (I may be wrong) But theyre too expensive for my taste. If I end up spending 400 bucks on that new radeon 8500 all in wonder dv I might consider getting one of those but for now... too rich for my blood.

I have done quite a bit of video editng i continue to use MPEG4. You can make anysize output you want via size of the file or resolution.
Go here this site will explain all your needs.Digital Digest (http://www.digital-digest.com/)

I use flaskmpeg for the conversion but you will have to have the divx codec installed on whatever computer you try to view the file on.

That should be fine. My home computer and Work computer should be the only 2. And if not I can always carry a cd with The codecs on it.

Does Flask work ok on XP I don't want any troubles. And I know I should be able to play with it. But If I want say to fill A 700 Mb cd with Approx 60 Minutes of video. Would I be able to do that at 640x480 resolution with 29.97 fps? Or would I even be able to do better. Im stuck at work right now Otherwise Id already be at home playing with it.

Sorry it took so long to reply the thread was moved. One of the fields in the conversion is bit rate. This is adjusted according to video resolution and size of the end file. At a high resolution of what you are asking may be about the limits for a 2 hour movie without losing too much clarity. It does work on windows Xp by the way. Thats what i'm mainly running. My end files become an AVI and they play on media player to which automatically selects the DIVX codec once installed. I download and instaled a newer version of it the other day. Supposed to be better.
