View Full Version : Pinky making his way to the AMD side
I recently acquired (thanks to a fellow member) a duron 700. Purchased a Shuttle AK11 (newest revision with all voltage, bus, and multiplier settings in the bios). Haven't started playing yet, by time it was up and running last night it was 2AM, I'm on caffeine at work today :p
specs:
AMD Duron
D700AUT1B
AKBE0035DPBW
92387540068
Anyway, just wondering about words of wisdom from experienced AMD members. I have unlocked the L1s with a standard #2 pencil, being careful not to cross anything. I refined the volcano II (with big-ole fan) that was also give. Under full load 1.7v at stock speed last night it was at 33C, case temp of 24-25C, room temp (floor temp with outside door cracked open ;) ) 23C
How 'bout showing a fellow overclocker some brotherly love ;)
Welcome to the AMD world! :) Your temps are looking good. My old Duron ran at 52C full load (700@1000Mhz), so I think you will have a very good chance to get a good overclock.
I'm sure you will dig your new Duron, especially the folding times! ;)
Have fun!
Its good to see you over here in AMD land. Did you notice what stepping the duron was? My AKBA 600 duron did 1100 aircooled wiht a voltmod and 1200 watercooled at a crazy 2.33v. I hope this is encoureging enough for an AMD newb.
Pinky, I had a 700 up around 950-1000 stable. It should be a great system! Just remember to watch your temps! :) (I'm sure you already knew that) ;)
That's the lovin I was looking for :)
I was hoping to hit about 1000, but 900+ will do... mind you I won't be able to tweak much from the bus as the only memory available was PC100 which may or may not climb higher...
even without the uping the fsb u still have ur multiplier :)

Ahhhh Pinky.
Knew we'd get over here sooner or later. There's just more to play with :D

i have a 700 thats stubborn as heck.. only does 880mhz on air.. i think that will all change when i play with it with my watercooling before using it on my baby in my sig.. back to the point i think my 700mhz is the same stepping.. but don't worry i just got a dog chip out the batch.. happy ocing pinky!
Got some good results with this one ;)
Unforuntately the #2 pencil I was using wasn't very conductive so I was getting all sort of strangeness when using any of the unlocked multipliers...
Forutunately my PC100 memory runs wells at cas3 140mhz with 4way interleaving :D, so I have her folding-purring at 980mhz with room for more once I stop at the gifts store or drug store and grab a better pencil...
temps are 36C fulload, 25C case and 22C room
using a volcano II

Very nice temp you got there.... What voltage is that at?

Why so low? Pump up that voltage and break the 1 gig mark... You have the temps for it.

Once you have had a taste of AMD, you will never look back ;)

I'm not looking to break any records, even with low temps I'm playing it safe until I can get the multipliers to work 100% correctly, then I'll push her up... had it running 1050 but on reboots I'd get a bios rom error and have to reset the cmos...
I've been sure AMD was the way for me since I got my first P3 and realized how slow in benchies when it was compared to the same clock speed AMD chips ;)

Man, you really have the temps for it. Up that voltage a bit and see how your chip likes it. Most of the time there will be a "sweet spot" for 'em. Mine just happens to be stock voltage...
pinky get a defoger repair kit from pepboys or something for like 8 bucks and unlock it with that.. it perment and is very conductive.. there is a review on the overclockers site but i lost the link...

I'm glad to hear you like you AMD chip. How high was your FSB when you ran it at 1050MHz? Also I don't know much about Shuttle boards, so please tell me what chipset is on that board of yours?

Forget, I was tinkering with the multiplier and would get errors/non-boots when I tried to reboot or after changing bios settings from time to time, since setting it to default multiplier it doesn't do that, so I concluded it was the penciling...
Price pencils and it would cost more than that defogger. If someone could link me up I'll get that kit tonight ;)
BRB in a few hours to "unlock" it premanently... I'm sure I'll find it someplace on the net or on the site/archives...
**update: I think this (http://www.overclockers.com/tips475/) will do unless someone knows of a simpler way
thats how i did it.. very clean job takes a bit longer but u know its working great and clean.. also if u cant find it at a auto repair store here is a link it cost a bit more because of shipping..

it the very last product on that page.. good luck
Hey Pinky!
Welcome to the "Evil" AMD side, anyway, about your restarting problem, You may want to unlock the duron, and then reset the BIOS/CMOS on the motherboard, most of the time this fixs the restart with unlocked L1's a not...
But Im guessing youmay have alrdy done this...

Hey angry! is that your winter cooling rig as your avatar?? :D
I just got the defogger stuff and will try the tape method. Be back later to share my results.

Glad you decided to go with the defogger kit! It works so much better! Good luck.
Welcome aboard. It's is just too much fun playing with AMD. Would'nt think of going to Intel. Looks like you have a good one there. L1s and a little more power ought to bring you up to or over the 50% oc area.
She runs fine but when I set the bus speed to 133mhz (which is where it's at now) and pump extra voltage I get either nothing or a Bootblock Bios ROM Checksum error.
I know the multipliers work, but once I step out of the 1/3 divider realm into the 1/4 divider (anything over 124mhz) this happens. Also, multipliers up to 9.5x work with 100mhz bus but the 10x+ multipliers won't work at all.
I used to get this thing to boot fine 7.5x 133 mhz but this problem is now preventing even this bootup (even saw 1093mhz post).
I've spent 4 hours this evening trying all different combinations, settings, bios flash(es) etc etc etc, I'm giving up hope and just set it to 133mhz bus at 7x for now. if anyone has seen this please let me know if I'm missing something.
Yes, I'm using the defogger, but having the same types of issues I was before the kit, only now worse :(
Use the same multiplier (7x?) and start raising the fsb. It took me about 2.2v to hit 1120 on water. Watch the heat, as I am sure you know.

if you have a magnifying glass or a jewlers loupe, take a look at the L1s again. I was having a similar problem a while back with my tbird and the cause was a trace amount of defogger paint connecting two bridges. It was almost unnoticeable, even with the 5x jewlers loupe, but i scratched a small trench with a needle to sever the connection, and all multi settings worked fully.
