I want to reformat my hard drive so I can do a clean install of windows xp, but I don't know how. When I had windows98 I would hit F8 during startup and just type "format c:" but that doesn't seem to work in XP, could someone help me out?
Well if it's the original disk it should be bootable. Just set your system to boot off of your CDrom. Then follow all of the instructions. When it comes to the part where you want to install WinXP, it should have a number of options. Pick the one to delete the current partition then after that pick what drive you want to install win XP on and pick what file system you want. It's pretty simple.
Or if the disk is not bootable. Just boot up the pc with a Win 98 or ME bootup floppy disk. Then make sure the Win XP CD is in the drive. Install the dos CDrom drivers. When you get to an A:\ prompt. Type X:\ (Substitute X for your CDrom letter) Then when it gets to a X:\ prompt type X:\I386\WINNT.EXE
That should start the install manually from a Dos prompt. Then just follow the instructions the same as written above.
There is a file made just for doing this, it will make a boot disk with all the files needed.
Here it is. Just rename the file to xpboot.exe as the system here won't accept .exe files.
