Just bought a 120GXP 40GB Hardrive. My question is how do I know they did not sell me a 60GXP 40GB Hardrive?

Because there is no reference on the package or the drive to GXP just long model numbers.

:eh?:

BTW my 75GXP 30GB bit the dust, 10 months old.

It should identify itself through your BIOS during POST. If it doesn't, and there are no identifiers on the drive go Here (http://www.storage.ibm.com) and find the download section. There is a diagnostic program that you can download that will most likely identify the drive and let you know if there are any problems with it.

Sisoft Sandra will tell you too.

If, during POST, the drive is identified as IC35L040AVVA07, then you have a 40GB GXP120.

BTW, my 75GXP is running a year and a half strong. Not as fast or as quiet as my 60GXP drives though.

Johan--"If, during POST, the drive is identified as IC35L040AVVA07, then you have a 40GB GXP120."

That's the number Johan but how do you know it's a GXP120?

Yodums--"Sisoft Sandra will tell you too."

Nope Yodums Sisoft Sandra gives you the IC35L040AVVA07 model number also, not the GXP120 number.

Nope stool this gives you the IC35L040AVVA07 model number also, not the GXP120 number.

How do we know IC35L040AVVA07 means GXP120? Shouldn't that be part of the model, number sheesh.

Also why did they go from

GXP75
to
GXP60
to
GXP120?????

Methodical guy rantings....lol

Go to http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/table.htm#Deskstar and you can see that your drive is a GXP120. It's just IBMs way of labeling, I guess.

They went from 75GXP to 60 to 120 b/c of platter size and, I believe, max storage capability of that model. For example, the 75GXP line maxes out at 75 GB and they run a 15GB platter -> models in 75GXP line are 15GB, 30GB, 45GB, 60 GB and 75GB.

Hey thanks Johan that sums it up well.

Was able to get my data off the 75GXP before it totally went haywire.
