I was going to buy an ATI 4850 but seeing as how they're no longer being produced, should I try to get one on the cheap before they're gone or is there a cost/performance equivalent in a DX11 ATI 5xxx card?

5750 is in the same ballpark, faster clocks, more memory bandwidth, but 10% fewer cores.
It's what i'd get, rather then a 4850.

I just picked up a 5750 on the Egg. It should be here within 2 days (paid for faster shipping). Once I get it in and putz around with it, I'll let you know how it is. I'm super excited.

I would much rather have a 4860/4870 over a 4850. I just got a 4870 512mb for $100 off craigslist with aftermarket cooler. im very impressed with gaming performance. I had a 5770 in a previous computer. it scored much higher on 3dmark06 but i believe is a tad slower in real world applications. my 4870 has 130gb/s memory bandwidth. my 5770 had like 78gb/s

I dont know what your trying to accomplish but i have a feeling that 5000 series cards will drop in price when nvidia finally releases their new cards. a 5770 should cost $120 IMHO. 5750 being around $90. I was very happy with my 5770 overall though. but for the money a 4870 hits the spot nicely for now.
