i recently purchase an xp1800+ with an asus a7v266-e
the cpu however was a retail, so the fan is the standard amd one.
When i first tried it, the cpu temperature, using all known monitoring programs was around 75c-78c after a 30 minute serious sam, or any 3d game.

i download the latest updated asus bios, downgraded the voltage to 1.75, installed and activated the halt tweak, openned up the case and bough two case fan. The result is, with the case open, the idl temp is around 43-45, but as soon as i play a 3d game for a good 30minutes-1hour the cpu temp jumps to 60-65 (btw is playing a demanding game the right way to make the cpu at full load?)

Now can someone please tell me ONCE AND FOR ALL if the ASUS a7v266-E have any problems reading the good TEMP!??!?asus support have got to be the most moronic idiots..and i can't get any help from them. Each AMD support guy ont the other hand, is giving me a different normal temp for the xp 1800+, one said 60 is perfectly normal, the other said 65, while others said 55C?!

Do you guys recommend returning my system back? Is there anyway to check is this standard amd fan is installed properly?
and lastly do you guys recommand me buying and instaling another fan with AS/AS2 paste?
The more i search the web and the forums the more i realise that EVERYONE with an amd 1800+/1900/2000 and an A7V266-E have a the same problems that i have, they all friggin have a high temp in the high 50 on full load.

Can anyone help?!

They all read from the insocket thermisistor and Asus boards are known to read it 10 degrees higher than what it really is. Go ahead and invest in a new heatsink like an Alpha PAL8045. Your temp worries will cease to exist then.

thanks for the reply and the welcome,
The problem is all the stores which are remotly close to me have only the following HS:
Indigo..36CFM expensive, 5000rpm
Dragon-3 36CFM expensive too, 7000rpm
and
the volcano 2,3,...,7 with the volcano 7 having a 46CFM at 2900rpm and 52CFM at 5000rpm and is chepaer then both fan mentioned above.
Only paste available is AS (no AS2).

The problem is i never installed an hs before,so upon buying one i am having the seller install it for me :(
So which one do you recommend?

I am not sure about your board but I have an Asus A7V133 and it does read around 10C higher then the real temp that is until i filled the socket with silicone/insulation and froze the sucker :D Now it doesn't work at all anymore because the sensor is right on the mobo, not the kind that can be bent up.

My advice to you is to get a Comp-U-Nurse or any simmilar temp monitor. It is a small led readout and a thin probe that you insert between the HSF and the cpu until it hits the core. Then there is no doubt as to what your temps are. They are around $15 well worth it for peice of mind. Also the retail AMD HSF is not a very good one, better cooling is needed if you are to overclock and increase voltage.

Good Luck!!!

out of thos choices i would say go with the volcano 7 and u can mod it a little to keep the fan running at max

EDIT: btw i use the same motherboard and an xp processor and i would say the temps are about 10C cooler then what it tells u

Take a look on the front page there is a link to a good HSF shootout.

Yeah around here all they sell are no-name brands and the occasional Acer heatsink (Didn't know they made them). Volcano 7 is about the best out of the ones you mentioned, but I would still go higher than that. Just like me, your going to have to turn to online stores if you want better cooling. Here are a few good ones:

www.coolerguys.com
www.2cooltek.com
www.frozencpu.com
www.coldcpu.com
www.svcompucycle.com

You can also try www.pricewatch.com and if you find a product and price you like, check out if the reseller is reputable at www.resellerratings.com
