View Full Version : Hoot: need info on building XP thermal diode reader

I know Hoot created a thermal diode reader for the XP's and he's given instructions in the Cooling Parts forum (threads 59636 and others).

However I can't seem to get access to it because it requires me to have at least 100 posts before I can view it.

Can Hoot or someone else point me to a version that I can read, or remove this restriction ?

Thanks,
rossd.

I just ran into this article myself. Hope it helps ya out.

The article that Diggrr refers to is all I needed to make mine.

If your motherboard uses the Winbond chip for monitoring the thermistors instead of the VT82C686, you can mod your motherboard to read the thermal diode as opposed to making a module that connects to the SMBus. It is covered here:

There are many good threads over there on the Thermal Diode. Just do a search in the Overclocking & Cooling Forum.

Thanks. This was a good read, and helpful.

I think I'll still go with the Maxim chip. I don't trust Winbond to produce a decent temperature sensor for the -50C to -30C range, which is really where I want to measure. At least Maxim gives a 5C accuracy rating for its chip, even at -55C.

Also I think it's easier to attach to a few points on the mobo than it is to replace passive components on an SMD board.

Thanks again,
rossd.
