It was probably just a bad board, if you didn't change any voltages or anything, then you won't be causing any issues.
I could hae been your power supply, so I'd check that out if you could, as it could easily take out your whole system.
 
Unstable power. If you put a load on it, and you loose a lot of voltage, then that really hurts componets.

As soon as you get a new board, i'd check your vdroop and all the rails to make sure they're holding up well.
 
If it's not sending consistent power to your components it can do some serious damage, components are spec'd at a certain voltage for a reason, higher or lower can do damage, inconsistencies are even worse.
