Mirror's Edge, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, and Defense Grid now purchased. I already have both STALKERS, plus extra copies of each that came with graphics cards, so no luck on that deal :(

Yeah I got Torchlight over the weekend. Absolute digital crack, I only wish I had started my first game on harder than normal, I got some good items and a few upper skills and my character can tear through dungeons like crazy now.

Steam's super cheap game sales over the last 3 or so months have gotten me to buy more games than I had for a long time prior to that. The demos are what sell me half the time. Thinking about Deus Ex GOTY edition, a classic game that I never played. The only things I have to think twice about are ones where I'd really like to have a manual (some RPGs and RTS) so I always check etailers for boxed versions too.

I need to browse some more - I'm on the digital bandwagon might buy a few games I already own (UT series???) if it means I can register them on Steam and get rid of the CD's =) - it sure is a heck of a lot easier than managing patches and finicky optical drives...

[EDIT]: Looks like that $2 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. deal and the others mentioned in the OP are only for the next 26 hours or so (there's a timer on the steam store homepage). Better move on that if you want it (I sure did)!

Looking forward to seeing (rather,"blindly hoping for") some EA stuff 90% off in the coming days (C+C, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc)!

Never played STALKER ... good game?
I read up on some reviews, thinking for 2 bucks it must be a cheap flash game carryover... but wow! It looks very, very nice and is very well reviewed by ordinarily harsh game critics - I can think of dumber things I've wasted 2 bucks on - can't wait for some "me" time to give this a run-through (family arrived yesterday for the holidays)!

I'm in the same boat. I was very, very wary of Steam and all other digital distribution "stores," but the EXTREME convenience of being able to install/uninstall games I own on any computer any number of times without dealing with discchecks, SecuROM, CD-keys and other DRM headaches is frankly amazing. I wish all of my games and software could be registered with Steam, but alas too many other software developers (Microsoft, Blizzard, etc) are trying to compete with "digital stores" of their own to make that happen... maybe someday!

The Rockstar Holiday pack is impressive, but not my cup of tea since I have trouble enjoying the GTA series:
Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto 2
Grand Theft Auto 3
Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Manhunt
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Midnight Club 2
Wild Metal

$87.42 Individual price
$69.99 Package price
-$23.10 Holiday Sale
$46.89 Total!

Personally, I LOVE Max Payne 1/2... they also fall in the "I own it but I'd buy it again on Steam" category, but not with all that racing/GTA flak attached :p

I've sprung so far for Mirror's edge and STALKER myself... I'd jump on more but my wallet's already strained from holiday shopping and I think that's a well spent $7 that should last my gaming sweet-tooth for awhile... will certainly pay attention to tomorrow's deals though!

Is it possible to add the key to your steam account?
If it's a valve game, the answer is yes.

If it's not, it must be on this list:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

I truly WISH I could simply register/download ALL of my games/software on Steam, but alas that would require Blizzard, EA and every other developer to allow Steam full distribution rights (which I suppose big-box stores like WM/BB wouldn't appreciate, since Steam tends to undercut MSRP nicely, if not consistently).

The only downside to Steam-installed gaming is that you have to have an internet connection to install (naturally), and update patches are sometimes delayed, which is less of an issue if you don't play games right as they come out (a wallet-healthy habit ;)).

Heh yeah I don't need the manuals from Steam itself for any particular reason, it would just be another digital copy. If it wasn't clear I was talking about having a printed manual (or less importantly other goodies) which means buying the retail box. For single player games it's not a big deal to wait a year or so when they're like $15-20 anyway.

theres a starwars pack, I remember using the skills were quite fun in jedi outcast or was it academy (they look the same) (grab enemy by neck with force and throw them away, light saber shield and rape the enemies.), too bad kotor is not in the pack.

hmm i'm gonna get kotor anyway kotor 2 is not yet on steam so they might bundle it and **** me off with a better price when it comes.

I feel like getting it but I remember I hated some part of it. (the getting lost part, and dizzyness)

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2103/
anyone whose played those want to give me some advice. I got css on sale and kind of disappointed there.

I'd get dirt but I'm not sure how competitive it is., realistic games are usually competitive. or at least a game with a lot of players would be.(i like competitive how suck is it to buy an online game to have limp players.)

they should really make a gundam wing game that plays like jedi knight's saber battles.(maybe they do but I've never heard of it)

Think about the people who bought L4D2 at full price or full price for the four pack. Now it's $33 or $25/person in the four pack :o All it should tell people is not to buy games, even hot multiplayer ones, until a month or two after release.

I guess it's good I don't play multiplayer games to stroke my ego then :D

Beyond CS:S, which I just happen to have had forever, I have pretty much no interest in playing FPS online because of most of the people who play them. Rather ironic that the primary draw of a multiplayer game can be its biggest problem too.

anyone else have problems of this nature with the combo pack deals?

theres 2 combo packs the one I got for 10 dollars which is called the star wars jedi knight collection and the new one today star wars premier pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2660/) for 24.99

I just got the star wars jedi knight collection (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2103/) for 10 and the kotor for 5(separately). kotor 2 is not on steam yet but should be an old game.

what i'd hate to do is having to rebuy a new pack just for kotor2 and maybe some of the other starwars games.

steam is a funny beast, sometimes I get a cheaper deal(more games) with real media than i do with steam. I haven't had any issues with it yet like you described.

ps my jedi knight pack had star wars dark forces...http://store.steampowered.com/screenshot/view/32400/1/?size=800
it was made for dos...lol win7 home would not support it i guess, I was running it on vista home premium with xp mode.

Then why even give L4D games a thought? The multiplayer is where the fun is at. Unless playing the campaign with bots over and over is your thing.

With any game, those issues are not as common when you play with a good group regularly. You going to tell me CS doesn't have elitists? They originated there. ;)

I wavered when Torchlight was $10. This weekend it fell temporarily to $5 so I gave it a drop too...

Oh.My.Gosh! This IS Diablo 3 without the wait! I'm absolutely loving this game (and it's performance on older hardware) - my only concern is now I'm not sure Diablo 3 will be able to blow my socks off so easily! I've been playing a "barbarian" of sorts, and he's already picked up skills that look very much like all the jaw-dropping stuff in the Diablo 3 video prequels...

Best $5 I've spent in a very very long while! Easily worth the $10 you can still nab it at!

I played 240 hours of it before I got a bit tired of it. The game is nothing compared to L4D and tripwire constantly releases updates to it. In fact, the mod came out way before left 4 dead even came out.

I do have a guest pass if you want to try it out.

It's a lot of grinding. But it's a good game for the price. And the rounds go faster than they do in L4D.

It only has 1 game type though. Defend from wave after wave of zombies. Fight same boss each time. There's always exploits that make him too easy to kill however.

Burn out isn't a sim game so much, it has a small small place in options to adjust steering sens, accerlation sens, ect but its not much more than that.

Each car has its own strengths and handling abilities so you do have to be somewhat skilled at driving but nothing to the degree of grid, but it helps alot because as you progress along the races get farther away, the computer is faster, and you have to be extremely aware of short cuts to gain a slight lead, and not only that you have to be ready to do it at any time.

There isn't really tracks in this game, imagine GTA 4 , meets Tony Hawk, meets Grid.

You get the open free world of gta to choose races, you complete a series of races and competitions that you get high scores on for spining your car, jumping, ect, winning races, winning road rages (bumper cars, run cars off the road), and then you get the aspect of GRID which is the importance of choosing the right car for the right race, and damage effects.

I love Grid, I love need for speed:shift, but I also really enjoy burnout. It reminds of watching old dukes of hazzard episoeds where your car sails through the air in a high speed chase.

It is much much more arcadish but not to the point where you can drive with your eyes closed, you DO have to pay attention. The cars do handle like real cars for the most part. But the game at its core is meant for an arcade player. It is the best balance I've seen to date though.

I found Burnout to be boring and annoying. It is one of those games that shows cut scenes that you can't escape out of, and it shows one every time you win a race or select a different car. The announcer sounds like corporate trying to be hip. You know how that turns out. The action is very repetitive. For the road rages, all you do is bump the bad guy into the wall. The interface makes it very evident that it is a console port.

I would pay maybe $5 for it, but not more. There are maybe 4-5 hours of decent fun in the game.

the poor man's left 4 dead is cs 1.6 with zombie mod. (is this the game that left 4 dead is based on? cuz It just connected for me even though i played left 4 dead a few months ago)

burnout has some pretty bad controls there's like no controllable shifting not meant to be close to real life handling at all, meant as a crash and fake drift on a track game. (only way I made this game fun while playing with everything locked was playing with 2 other buddies of mines taking turns to beat their scores, its more fun to watch, point, laugh, make fun of while on your break) I hope we are talking about the same burnout.

most if not all nfs handles almost like real cars but has that arcadey feel

splinter cell games might be worth it, I've played a demo before so its decent.

now that i've accumlated up my response, I'm so grateful steam has put these deals out. it really helps everyone as far as I can see. I wouldn't remember half these old titles if they weren't on sale.

That is the most awful comparison, on top of inaccurate. L4D games have custom maps, 8 players AND dedicated servers.

And the original's 3 game modes, is 2 more modes than KF.

The Rockstar Holiday pack is impressive, but not my cup of tea since I have trouble enjoying the GTA series:

Personally, I LOVE Max Payne 1/2... they also fall in the "I own it but I'd buy it again on Steam" category, but not with all that racing/GTA flak attached :p

I've sprung so far for Mirror's edge and STALKER myself... I'd jump on more but my wallet's already strained from holiday shopping and I think that's a well spent $7 that should last my gaming sweet-tooth for awhile... will certainly pay attention to tomorrow's deals though!

Holy Canoli... it's like someone at Steam is WATCHING me !

My Holiday Bundle so far :bday::

$5.00 Torchlight
$5.00 Mirror's Edge
$2.00 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Chernobyl
$3.79 Jade Empire 2
$3.74 Max Payne + Max Payne 2 Bundle (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/603/)
$13.60 Civilization® IV: The Complete Edition (all 3 expansions included) (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1618/)

run the main exe in xp mode yet?

on a side note, i'm wondering if I should get l4d1, i've played it briefly but haven't owned it. it was on sale at $7.49 normal price 29.99, quite a steal. all i know is l4d is night play and l4d2 is day play and made a little better, I kind of don't want to get the game if the players are gonna leave(to number2). I play zombies all the time so it has no wow factor(i'd get it just for competitive shooting, fast paced fragging) for me and the darkness makes l4d kind of hard. probably gonna wait for a l4d pack or for number 2 to be on sale. most likely the pack since I'm not quite sure what i'm missing.

if this stuff keeps up steam is gonna have a monopoly on the online games(delivery system) department. everyone is gonna use steam. xfire died didn't it?

all i know is since steam is such a big player in this department its good so far but can it go bad? (death of linux games?)

(sorry this was off topic, a simple agree or disagree would suffice for a response, if any, to that section)

back on topic it's cheaper to buy l4d and l4d2 separate than it is together lol. check out the packages that include l4d (separate 44.98 together 52.49)

i have been playing cs for a long time so i remember but not sure about counter strike mods for zombie mode, I think they predated l4d and i don't think it's just a coincidence. With some mods to knife only mode and health as well as maybe more gravity for the zombies, thats basically all you need to change in cs to make it l4d(fun yeah but i think valve just reskinned the idea). I also enjoyed superhero mod its like cs on hacks on steroids.

for anyone who hasn't played cs superhero servers, you get unlimited ammo(the punisher), shooting someone gives you health (vampire), regenerative health(wolverine), shoot lasers(cyclops), shoot rockets(heat seek, laser guided, camera guided), kamehamaha?wave, freeza distructo disc(cuts anything in half) high health like 10 000 hp, no clip (through walls), teleport, god mode(colossus hero power), golden guns that shoot lasers, you set remote detonated mines anywhere(bomberman) low gravity. fly, jet pack(iron man), spider webs, batman hook, light saber, flash(superspeed). all this was stacked so you can have them at the same time.

I wouldn't mind if cs was remade with a better engine but feel closer to 1.6 or 1.5(Perfect aim you'd think i was hacking) so that they can include better physics and graphics for mods like super hero(you just get the line for a web, no graphics, and player models are cs models not any cool looking animated heros, you get halo model (master chief) with a high damage p90 but thats usually it) or look what they did with earth special forces. mods are the bomb. check the trailer it's half life on super roids http://www.esforces.com/

I don't care how long this is, i don't think it's been done before, esf:

With the maps more detailed and since we lost the restrictions of the old BSP file format we were able to drastically increase the size of the maps themselves. While the old system allowed the maximal size of a box map to be ( 8192 x 8192 x 8192 ) we are now facing an unlimited size in the maps. Meaning that the only limit is how far the player is actually prepared to fly. So you can fly in a direction for 3 hours and you'd still be going forward if you wished to.
funny that sounds like our own universe.

Back to hero mod, I don't even care if this idea gets stolen, the main objective of superhero mod is to dominate the other team, or any player for that matter, you get experience points for killing which levels you up(each level is an earned power and allows +1 more concurrent use of powers), method of killing counts for different points based on difficulty, like the most powerful attack doesn't get you that many points but it can kill everyone on the team. the only thing missing is a story that can tie these super powers together like l4d did and keep the game and fun progressing. (experience and levels are periodically reset and takes like a month to get to top, level 60 levels)

The story can be some crazy shape shifting super villians are stealing superpowers from heros. they kill heros or a device that allows this is doing it(maybe an ultimate hero can be obtained by gathering all powers into 1 god player that gets to do whatever she/he desires to their enemies for 1 round, ultimate super distruction). As a counter, maybe the super heros have a scientist team(or batman) that created a device to share powers in order to combat the evil power stealers. the more powers they steal the stronger they get and more powers are available to them, they can add single player or rpg modes to this but the gold mine of fun is muliplayer stacked heros vs stacked heros. this game could use some nicer graphics and physics but needs a story that ties and stays true to using guns, and the cs feel(certain super beams go through all walls and kills everyone in the path, that wouldn't be possible if the engine or designer didn't include those perks or counter strike recoil, other games have no recoil at all). compared to l4d: shotgun, zombie, kind of boring dont you think?

Read up some answers for myself...

Looks like all online play for PC gamers is shared through MSLive! servers. Steam is just there for distribution. There are achievements but they're handled by MS, naturally.

Multiplayer in the PC realm doesn't appear to have any unique problems the console versions don't already have. Problems common to all platforms include a plethora of players who turtle, shoten (ryu and company) characters, potential for lag and disconnectors who don't want their scores tarnished. Whether this issues become overwhelmingly frustrating or not appears to vary based on the individual.

The only thing making me hesitate to buy is that super street fighter 4 (with add'l characters and such) is purportedly due in Q4 of 2010... Once that's out there's sure to be package deals :/

GTA's still good, apart from the Trainer-users, the ones I come across only use it if they are shot for no reason, and apparently they only work in Free Mode, and not the objective-based modes..

Multiplayer in GTA is fun, but it has some problems.

It doesn't really show your ping. It does the red yellow green scale thing, and it seems that the range for green is too great, because sometimes green is laggy, sometimes it isn't.

People from the USA are a minority. This is a problem because ping thing. Last night I was on a "green" server with people from Thailand, Russia, Norway, and the UK, all in the same gameserver. It was laggy stuff.

There are hackers, and not an easy way to kick them from games, unless you are the appointed host for the game. There aren't dedicated servers, so there aren't dedicated admins, and because of this you get a lot of douchebaggery that wouldn't happen if an admin was there to give people the boot.

The game is very CPU intensive. I'm at 3.8 GHz with my E7200 and it bottlenecks my card at medium texture quality. I don't really think the texture quality affects the CPU utilization either. You should be fine with the Q6600.

I don't like having to log into the 3 online systems just to play this game. You need Rockstar Social Club, Games for Windows Live, and Steam. Social club doesn't seem to have any purpose but adding an extra screen to click through on your way to play the game.

For $7.50, I think the game is totally worth it. The multiplayer experience is still fun even with the aforementioned problems. I didn't list any of the strengths for this game, but I think they outweigh the negatives.

Did you try any of the previous GTA's

I got it, but it is taking alllll day to "update" through Steam. Even though I am getting 500-800k/sec. It's been stuck at 32 or 37% all day long. Deleting the clientregistry file doesn't do anything either.

If i played and loved every other GTA game , will i like this one as well ?Only thing holding me back is the whole need to register 3 accounts just to play , do i need to do that for single player as well ?

Street Fighter 4 sucks. I cant believe I listened to a friend and bought it. I wish I could gift it to someone else.

I did pick it up also...

My experience has been quite the opposite :bday:

EXTREMELY addictive for me, in the special way only a hair-pullingly unforgiving 2D fighter can be =)!

Though I was concerned about the Super Street Fighter 4 release this year, I came to snatch the $9.99 deal based on two things: 1) Based on Capcom's history, it may be at least another 1/2-year post console release until SSF4 will find its way back to the PC, and 2) when SSF4 does become availiable for the first time, I want to be "trained up."

I've played almost exclusively online play so far, and have had only 2 matches where there was any noticeable slowdown due to connection. Even then it was gradual and didn't fully interrupt the flow of the match (more like a flash game/movie where too many items can cause a temporary slowdown).

I wouldn't blame anyone for not finding SF4 to be to their particularly liking, but if you're capable of falling in love with a challenging 2D fighter in this day and age, I'm sure there's a place in your heart for this title :).

PS: for goodness sakes don't play this without a decent gamepad/arcade stick! :p

[EDIT]: Steam is having an encore sale today with some of the previous deals, but there's only about 2.5 hours remaining! hop to it!

Sale seems to be over.

Had to be one of the greatest PC Game sales of all time!

Dont think I have ever bought so many titles in a short period of time before.

xbox and playstation controllers are gonna be the best ones you can use on a pc, I have an old ps2 type adapter. been using it for a long time now. would have gotten street fighter just to mess around.
