How many of you guys have reservoirs ? and how mant of you use some type of metal ??

I was thinking, for those of us without a heater core or particularly powerful fans on our radiators, but with a cheap metal box as a reservoir it might be an inexpensive idea to try and cool down some of the water comming through the res by putting some small HS/F units on, maybe something from an old P1 or 486 .

Sound sdumb to me too, but I figure if you got a metal tank and some warm water running through it, some of the heat would go into all that surface area ? sounds like a good way to help cool the water.

if the tank was in the case it'd prolly pick up more heat from inside the case than cool down.

Would have to worry about corrosion, since you would most likely be mixing metals. Copper and aluminum are thermally conductive materials, so if you have it in the case, it will be a nightmare.

I had a similar thought about this, but concerning bongs instead:

Ermm

Well I don't dare house anything inside my case except my waterblock.

as for corrosion, I just use water wetter, and I'd prolly buy an anofized rez or something for such an experiment.

You mentioned using a hsf from a PII or 486... What size resv are you talking about?!? A larger resv might be of more benefit... I have a 10gallon container from K-mart... $2.49 with lid...

7gallons for my bong with room for plenty o' ice...

something small.. 4x whatever maybe.. I suppose it depends.

I have an old paint pale I use right now, thats about as tall as my 17 inch monitor, heh..

I think it's like 5 gal or 10 gal or something...

but its plastic so that don't help none... :D

I think maybe I'll just save up for a Koolance and see how one of those works out.. I hate messing with hoses and crap all the time anyways

if the hoses aren't tiny or anything that can be used with other blocks/radiators could always experiment with an upgrade of sorts too...

:o

I think I understand... You want to use the metal container as a large heatsink itself(?)...

Yes.. something to that degree..

then I just attach a few smaller and quiet HSF units here or there, to take any heat off the box, that it happens to absorb from the water.

I'm gonna wait and see how my radiator performs with a better fan or two first tho.

this radiashack one I got don't have much power I think.

if you want it to cool make a rad.

If you want a res make a res. a rad makes a poor res and a res makes a poor rad

I can see you have plenty to contribute to the discussion
