alright, i just finished reinstalling windows 98se on my one machine, so i had to reinstall al my programs, including icq 2000B, i was wondering, my contact list was huge, like 130 people, and i would hate to try and find each one of them again
i burned a copy of my old icq files
can i replace a file from the new install with one from the copy i burned????
so that i don't loose my whole contact list
Place the NewDB folder in the ICQ directory, overwriting the old one. Should start right up with your contact list.
Thank me for not deleting this since it should be in Other Software. :D

where is the NewDB file that needs to be replaced located???
Should be a folder in your ICQ root directory. I'm still using 99a so it may have changed but I wouldn't think so.
Just go to C:\Program Files\ICQ\ and there should be a folder named NewDB. If you only have the files then delete everything in that NewDB folder and place your backup files in there. If you have the entire NewDB folder backed up, just copy and paste into the ICQ directory, overwriting that one.

the only thing i see in any folder that has "DB" in is a program called DBConvert, Database Convert, for when you upgrade your copy of icq.... thankx anyways Jon
anyone with icq 2000b know how to do this???
damn wrote a whole paragraph and had to erase it cuz i didn't read your last post.
just copy your contact list files into your 2000b folder and start icq. if by some chance your list doesn't show up run DBconverter.
whala, your list should be restored.. also i noticed with the newest version of icq you don't have to backup your list they keep a copy of it. I reinstalled icq a little while ago and magically my list was already there once i reentered my number and password
btw if i recall correctly new installs of 2000b don't have a 2000b folder right after install so if you don't see it simply create a folder in your icq directory called 2000b and put your contact list files in it

which copy of icq was that???
the one that automatically gets your contact list
what is the contact list file called?
In the newer ICQs, there's a folder called 2001a or 2000b, that's where your contact list is stored. Copy that folder into your new ICQ installation.
If you go to c:\program files\icq\2000b\ you should see either 3 or 6 files there that start with your icq number. If there are 6 then 3 of them are temp files. Copy the 3 files that are just your icq number with the following extensions: .dat, .idx, .msg. If you have history turned off you may not have the .msg files. Or just copy the entire 2000b subdirectory. If you upgrade icq to 2001b it will put your contact list on the icq server so you will not have to worry about copying it again in the future. It will also allow you to log in from any computer and access your contact list.
