Unless a CPU is specifically advertised as a Northwood, how can one tell if it is a Northwood or the older version? Newegg has a 1.8 Gig P4 on their site but they do not say if it is a Northwood. Do only the Northwoods' have a 512K L2 cache? Is there anything in the model number that defines which it is?

You are correct that only Northwoods have 512 L2 cache
THe northwoods also have a 1.5V Vcore vs a 1.75 for the willys
Also any northwood under 2.2 Ghz should be called a A chip
like 1.8A
If you see the micron manufacturing process it will be .13 for Northwoods and .18 for willys
Or if you get the sspec
http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/p4p.htm
and you can see that all current Northwoods are a B0 stepping
