I will be buying a heatsink for an amd xp 1900+. I was thinking a delta 80cfm fan on top of a MCX462 heat sink, with some artic silver thermal compound. Is this too heavy, too powerful, or an unnecessary setup

that will be just awesome... those fans are noisy tho, but you learn to live with the noise heck i don't even hear mine anymore.
on a side note i don't hear much anymore period.

AMD recommends a 300 gram heatsink, and i think this one weight over twice as much, can this damage the processor?

yes they can. But so can any HS
If you are not a klutz and pay attention you will be fine.

AMD recommend 24lb max force, but I've been using 37lb for over a month with no issues ;)

What force will this combination be producing?? Also should this fan be blowing onto the heatsink or sucking the air out of the heatsink

That is one of the best HSF you can get!!! No is not overkill if you plan to o/c or just having one of the best hsf in your computer. Lastly the Swiftech uses nuts and bolt to hold it down and not clip, so the force on it, depend on how tight you screw the bolt down.

I don't see anything funny. I must have a horrible sense of humor tonight. BradowskiTJ, that setup looks really good. You may want to check into an alternative for the fan if the noise the delta puts out is too much.

THanks for the help, as you may have noticed, this is all new to me

just make sure to take your time when you install the heatsink
be gentle... and don't screw the heatsink down too much
just enough so that it doesn't move around on the processor
and you should be fine
BTW that is the best cooler you can possibly buy ( short of water cooling)
enjoy :D :D :D
im not really sure you can have to much cooling, you'll be glad you got it when you start to overclock, trust me
