View Full Version : Warm to catastrophe to cool...a quest in cooling

So, here goes Brief overview:

Had the global heatsink....47 degrees idle, 52 deg full usage.

Got the MX462 Swiftech...installed incorrectly, burned up my 2 week old 1800+ (ouch...)

Got a new chip...First was OEM, so no free one for me...(double ouch...)

Installed more carefully (had plenty of practice thinking I just wasn't getting correct contact with the first chip...little did I know it was out of commission!).....37 degrees idle, 42 deg full usage.

Can't argue with results like that.

Here's the ole system specs:

Antec SX1035
4 fans - 2 antec in back, 2 80mm sunon fans in front
16x liteon dvd, 24x10x40 lite on writer
80gig 7200rpm maxtor
1800+
512mb 2100DDR crucial
abit kg7 mb

Does this seem sufficient temperatures? I don't think it'll go much lower because I was very careful with the ASII and definately have a good seal after the last fiasco. Either way, I can't complain about what I've gotten (without water cooling), just wondered if it looked a-ok, or there are any other suggestions.

Thanks for the help choosing this new heatsink, and the advice when I blew up the other one :(

flip your back fans over to blow into your case and you front ones over to blow out. you will lose 3C

Yes, I've seen you post that a few times, and I appreciate the advice, but it seems an odd suggestion as heat rises (doesn't it?). But I may give that a whirl. I have to get back into the case again for something anyway.

yes heat rises

and cool air cools

So why pump air all through you case and warm it all up and then try to cool your CPU with it?

Why not pump cool air right over your cpu and cool it right down?

If you CPU is cooler do you really care that hot air rises?

maybe i should put the "flip your case fan by your CPU over so it blows on you heat sink and you will lose 3C" in my sig.

It depends on where your case is sitting. My main rig is under a desk and when its running I have a little foot warmer the whole area is warm actually so having the air come in the front keeps my temps lower. If you case is sitting in an open area then it will probably help to have the intake closer to your hsf.

If you really think that the force of the hot air rising is going to overcome the cross draft from the fans...then try this:

Flip the fans around UserName suggests...then while you are in there put your CD and floppy drives in up side down and set the tower up upside down....there you have it now the outlet is higher that the inlet. :D

umm, what?

unless your case is sitting on a concreate floor and sucking artificialy cool air in you will always be better blowing cool air on the heat sink.

but don't take my word for it. Try it and see.

i have never had some one try it and not get an inprovment, but your setup might be different

Hey, don't get me wrong. As I said I would be happy to give it a whirl. When I thought about it each time I read it in a thread, that's the logic I came up with (fans in line with heatsink, more cool air). And 3 degrees would mean I could be in the 30's all the time which I would be more than happy with.

The temp seem alright. You can lower it more if you can get your ambient temp down.

i had been told portis's are smart. Now i know it's true

I'm assuming my ambient temp is the "sytstem temp"? That's listed at 26 degrees. Not sure if I'll get it any lower :) But thanks for the input!

Ambient temp should be the room temp

Ahh..of course. yes, since it's the study/guest bedroom guess I can't make it any cooler..hehe....sure the wife would love that. I'll try the reversing fan trick though. As I mentioned I gotta rummage round the case anyway.

Your not going to try setting your case up up-side down to make the outlet (Front) fans higher than the rear?

Everyone seems to think just because all the drives are at the top in cases that they have to stay there.....Hmmm if Austrailians were the first map makers would our view of the world be switched with the southern hemisphere at the top of the globe?? Right side up is only in the eye of the beholder.

I like the way you think!
