can I just paint right over my current beige paint job? I know I shouldn't, but I want my case re-operational in as little tiem as possible.
Also, how much paint do I need for a standard-sized case?
I painted my case with an Epoxy paint, didn't cause any harm that I know of, i sanded a ruff spot and them sprayed right over the baige. The great thing about the epoxy paint it that its REALLY hard and can't be scratched. mine is now a nice dark bluewith some trim lines.

so, how much for a con of epoxy paint?
I "borrowed" :D the can I used from work but it cost about $35 for a can about the size of a standard spray can.. yes it is very pricey

Just make sure you sand the case to rough up the surface and get rid of the high spots. Should take you no more than 2-3 cans of paint, depending on the finish you want to achieve. If you want a REALLY high quality finish, expect to use 4-7 cans of paint, a whole lot of wet/dry sand paper, and some rubbng compoung and automotive glaze and wax.

Make sure you sand it pretty well... If you miss any spots, the paint will start flaking from the missed spots and spread out from there.
Paint it in a warm place(may be hard to find in winter). My recommendation for paint is to get a metallic textured paint. It is very forgiving for less experienced painters. I think it looks better than standard paints also. Metallic paints are only $3.50 a piece at Home Depot, and you should only need one or two cans... depending how big your case is.

ok, so bottom line, sand to rough, spray, wet-sand to smooth, spray again, and smooth again?
sounds liek 6 hours of work... acceptable...

Actually, I only had mine apart for a couple hours... You can put it back together after the paint has set... Just be really careful not to scratch anything
I was able to leave my sytem running throughout the whole process, i simply removed the side, top and front pannel, the frame of the case was pretty flimsy but still held up well, i let everything dry overnight and put it back together in the morning.

What about an outter coat of some clear acrylic paint? Something to put a shine on it and make it scratch resistant... I understand about sanding the beast down, down enough to get all the paint off right? Or just to get the nasty stuff off?
Hmm, sounds easy enough, but I would like to be sure before taking a can of paint t a case and screwing up.. Thanks.

Yah, a clear coat would work fine, I like the look of a metallic paints finish though. A clear coat would probably change the way it looks.
The nice thing about painting is if you screw up, just strip it down and try again.

I used to strip the paint down to the bare metal, then I read somewhere that it makes a great primer (once it's sanded). I've yet to try out the theory, but it's sounds like it's viable. I'm due for a repaint pretty soon paint is getting scuff to the point where no amount of buffing will take out the scratches. I'll try my hand at writing an article and borrow a cam, so I can post pics as well. It will have to wait till spring though, Don't want to gas myself and the entire household with paing fumes.
