View Full Version : Vmod - not worth it :(

Finally got round to sorting out the second-stage vmod for my KT7A. Pushed the core up to 2.3V. What did I get?
Max @ 1.88V (no mod): 1480MHz (88W)
Max @ 2.1V (1 stage mod): 1575MHz (117W)
Max @ 2.3V (2 stage mod): 1595MHz (142W)
My temps were about 54C underload (insocket) at 1595. 1575 gives 45C load temp, I'm not sure about the 1.88V temp, possibly 36C but I'm not 100% sure on that. Idle temps are about 6C cooler in all cases. Water temp is roughly 25-6C regardless of clock speed.

Hey over 100mhz extra is nothing to sneeze at. Your temps at 2.3v are a little hight but not bad concidering. I voltmod every board I get and I think even an extra 50 mhz is good. 100mhz more is quite an accomplishment. I would be happy with those results.

I'm not sure on the accuracy of the temps, with a heatsink on my in-socket was a known 5C high at 50C (though spot on at 30C). So I wouldn't be surprised if it were a little off. I'm running 2.1V atm - 2.3V is too much for my poor PSU, the thing gets really hot and revs the fan like crazy if I use 2.3V.

Every chip is different. I have a 1.2 that will not OC at all even up to 1.85v. It will not even post above 1.4 but when at 2.05v it has been running 100% stable for about 6 months now at 1.5gig on air so you never know. When I do a vmod I solder a conector such as an old led or power switch wire you know the kind with a plug on the end, I steal them from junk cases. The reason for this is that I can plug in different resistors or a pot to play with. To undo the mod it is a simple matter to just pull the resistor out of the plug. My goal when doing a vmod is to have the default voltage of 1.75 acctualy be 2.05 which is just about the sweet spot to be.

A little extra note 2.3v is way to much for what little you gained I would back it down to 2.1v what was the diff? 10 or 20 mhz that is not worth it. Try and get some real temp readings I like the Comp-U-Nurse and simmalar products.

I used two pots for the mod. The work fine and allow me to tweak it. As I previously said, I don't run 2.3V - it's too much load on my psu. I run 1575@2.1V, runs a lot cooler and doesn't make my PSU practically melt.
