View Full Version : Win7 with SSD in RAID
Just built a new rig with 2 OCZ Vertex 30 GB SSDs in RAID 0. Does anyone know if Win7 will notice the RAID array as SSD and take advantage of TRIM? Is there anyway for me to tell in Win7 if it is recognized?

TRIM does not work with RAID. You will need the GC firmware or use the "Tony Trim" method as outlined by Tony at OCZ.
The GC firmware...can I install it to each drive in the array without losing data?

^ YES, you can update firmware WITHOUT losing data (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63543)...
you will want 1.41 FW for RAID
how to update firmware (OCZ 1.4/1.41) (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63498)
PS, I HIGHLY SUGGEST NOT USING TONY TRIM!

use the raid, and when one day you belive it takes to long, maybe you need to either trim or re-format/install, but I would bet that wont be needed.
most use of a computer is reads, which seldom slows down.
To answer your original question. I don't THINK Win 7 will recognize your raid as SSD. It didn't for mine. You can easily change trim commands (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63543). Check that link to the OCZ forums, very helpful. I think most of your questions are asnwered WITH solutions...
Win 7 backup is actually pretty good. I normally use Ghost 14. I just reinstalled everything (using Win 7 backup) after getting some slow write speeds, and everything went smoothly. speeds back up to 302 write 384 read!

Heh, yeah I think ghosting software is about to enjoy a rather large spike in sales..
wow after the simple "no", I stopped reading the post! Thanks for the updates! I've been going back and forth over the past couple days on what to do... 1.41 and use GC? take them out of RAID and use TRIM? These drives in RAID 0 are screaming fast, but so is a SSD on its own... Recomendations? I want the longest life out of these babies!

why do you recommend against the tony trim?
it SEEMS like Tony Trim slows the drives down, why? i have no idea! This is MY personal experience. If you search the OCZ forums, there are other who have had the same experience. Not too many people post negative things, I did and got "warned" to stop posting "after tony trim slowdown thread" (hint, maybe search tony-trim slowdown raid). I have some instructions I'll post here when I get home on how to use Diskpart and Sanitary Erase to get your speeds back. In MY opinion, that's the easiest way to get speeds back. I LOVE MY RAID! For some strange reason my speeds dropped quickly in one week after months after 300write 375 read speeds. Ok, went on too long, my suggestion, try Tony trim, if it works, great. if not do my diskpart/se reimage technique...
