Sent my 9800gx2 card in for warranty repair, the card was deemed faulty, but they dont have any cards in stock (9800gx2's) and they are offering to replace the card with a nicer one. What cards should i be looking at? Im looking to keep it in one slot (no crossfire or SLI as i already have another 9800gx2) and looking to improve or keep performance the same as before.
So far based on looking at:
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-cards-charts-2009-high-quality/3DMark06-v1.1.0-3DMark-Score,1632.html
The only two im seeing are the HD5970 and GFX295, both having two cards in one like my previous generation 9800gx2. While i know these are much higher caliber, they are the only ones that will replace the card i sent in besides the card itself.
Any other cards i should be looking at/considering? I can trash the other 9800gx2 and go SLI, but i dont want to beg too much for an upgrade.
Let me know where to go from here!
Kevin.

What are they offering you as a replacement?

Right.... what are THEY offering you? Normally, you dont choose they just send you a comprable or better performing card. But they sure as heck wont give you an ATI card!!!
And no, those are not the only ones that will replace your card. A single GTX285 I believe beats out a 9800GX2.
Personally, if I was you, I would get the replacement they offer, sell your other 9800gx2, and get an HD5870 or 5970. I assume with all that horsepower you had you are on 1920x1080/1200 or greater resolution, yes?

Response:
the equivalent in performance for ATI flavor would be HD 4890 HD-489A-ZDF7 and we have plenty of those in stock to use if you`d like to go ahead with that, or wait for another comparable Nvidia flavor card we can put replacement on hold if you`d rather. We usually don`t offer an upgrade program, so if you`d prefer a different model card, that would have to go through management approval so there`s no guarantee we could do any better than a 4890. Thanks, Michael

This is through a retailer then I presume? NOrmally if you send a card in for RMA through the actual MFG (think Evga) they dont have ATI cards to offer.
Id still sell both and go 5870/5970.

^^^ The man speaks the truth :-)
If you really must go Green Team, you will be waiting until April to get your hands on a card if you are lucky & the way Nvidia works, that monolith of a GPU is going to cost you $600+++. Of course I am just guessing at this point, as I am hoping they can use their crippled Fermi chips for the low/mid range at release.
Oh.. and you will need a "Fermi Approved" case :-)

XFX sells both ATI and Nvidia cards, so it could also be through them.
The 4890 is a slight downgrade from the 9800GX2, I'd push for at least a GTX 285 or 5850.

Both slower than the GX2..
5850 or GTX 285 are in (roughly) the same performance class.. They're trying to downgrade you.
