okay im trying to get this 40 gig hard drive of mine to wokr with my socket 7 mobo.. heres the problem it sees it but won't load anything off of it.. cause its too big i had the same problem when i was running a maxtor 40gigger in it before but tech support helped me out of that problem by adjusting the jumpers.. but this hard drive is a samsung and they no longer make hard drives and don't have any tech support.. so how do i get this hard drive to work?? should i partition it into 10 gig sections cause it will recognize my 10 gig hd...

any input is welcome

I would try updating the bios on your mother board this might add support for larger hard drives so its worth a shot

What BIOS is your mobo using? Look into it and on mine, there is an option called "IDE Channels" and you can toggle the Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, etc. Just see what your settings are for the new hard drive (is it a slave?).

There are some programs out there that overcome those bios limitations, EZBios by WD and MaxBlast by maxtor come to mind...

Its a samsung drive? That might be a problem since you are right, Samsung support is the worst around...well, atleast their online support...they don't even have a downloads page (atleast that I saw...)

Anyway, try using Maxblast or the WD software. You can find them on their respective download pages on their websites.

I know they won't work unless you have their harddrive though. However, if I remember, one of those two lets you do anything as long as you have their drive attached, i.e. maxblast will work fine as long as you also attach a maxtor drive to the computer...then, theoretically, you could config the bios, then just remove the maxtor drive.

Case in point, our old pII had a 10gb WD drive in it with EZbios, put in a Maxtor instead and ezbios stayed running...

Also, I'm not sure about partitioning the drives, I mean, if you're bios claims its only a 10gb harddrive rather than a 40gb, than the partition software wouldn't know it was a 40gb either, right?
