View Full Version : Questions about my WIP Folding rig....

As of right now, the system configuration is all figured out.
I just want to make sure that when I begin to fold on it 24/7, that I will be using all of the juice 9150e CPU has to offer...
From what I've been reading here, people set up virtual machines ontop of their installed OS and have F@H clients run on each set-up.... does that increase folding performance or what?
So, my question is, should I set up a VM on this PC? Will it increase the CPUs PPD? How much RAM should I have at least?
Is it hard to set this up?

im also just in the process of installing ubuntu on a vwmare client to enable higher ppd's.
Will get back to you on the results.
ubuntu is almost installed :)

that is currently the best practice, as the windows SMP client only does A1 WUs, while linux will do A2 WUs. Additionally, you could just run linux, and ditch the VMs, but that may not be an option for you, so VMs would be best in that case.

installed now, just configuring SMP Client

Well I can just install Linux instead of windows. What I'm wondering is having a VM running F@H, even within linux OS, will I get more PPDs?

Nope, the VM is only so that you can run a linux client in windows.
If you can simply install linux as the main OS you'll be up 5% or so compared to a VM setup. (Assuming your CPU has virtualization optimizations, if it doesn't then native linux is much more efficient)
On the 9150e, or any quad for that matter, you need one 4 core VM for maximum performance. VMware Player 3.0.0 is the best VM solution, rock solid and fast (3% to 4% OH loss).
Edit:
Native Linux is best, as Bob points out.

So, just to make sure I understand.
I have linux as the main OS and running a 4core SMP F@H off of it PLUS a VMware PLayer running another 4 core SMP F@H.... I'll get more PPD?

Most PPD for a quad is running a single four core FAH client in native linux. No VM stuff at all.
If you're running native linux you don't want any VM stuff.
The only reason to run a VM for folding is if you HAVE to run Windows. Linux SMP a2 WUs outperform Windows SMP a1 WUs by 60% to over 100%, depending on the a1 WU.
This will change with SMP2, which is coming "soon".

Gotcha.
Linux it is for this rig...

I am unsure, but I believe you can fold on that card too... there is an install/operation guide for getting the GPU client running under linux... I'm sure that card wont net a ton of PPD, but every bit counts :D

Oughta be able to conjure up at least a few hundred PPD, assuming it's CUDA enabled.

Oh it is CUDA (8400GS). When I was testing it (repaired the card) it showed 10,000. Which is actually 10million iterations....

Now that I've been doing this a bit more and reading up on PPD.... how much PPD should I expect with the 9150e?

Well now with the A3's out you might want to install the Windows client.
For some it actually folds faster than a VM client.
Not sure on PPD on the CPU though.
The 9150e is considerably slower than a Q6600 and will make less ppd with the Win SMP2 client than with the Linux SMP client, running a2 Wus, in a VM.

What about VirtualBox or VM on Mac running Linux with A2 clients?

You don't need any more pc's folding I can't catch you now dang it.
Now I got TM.ProjectX knocking at my back door and will be passing me in like 2 weeks :(. I need more rigs dang it.

Virtual BOx is reported to be 10% slower than VMware Player. Mac is a rather broad term for which to predict production. Some are faster than a Q6600 some aren't.
