View Full Version : IE 5.5 eating up processor power.
Maybe this is just a problem for me but Opera seem to use ZERO resources compared to IE5.5 which often hits 50% of processing power when the large avatars on the board load. Opera might not be quite as pretty but it sure is faster and less of a resource hog.

my 2 c Thanks for the heads up Ebola. I have Opera loaded but never use it. Maybe this will help in Folding while browsing.

The free version of Opera has an ad banner that is very animated. This in itself uses cpu cycles. Registering your copy removes the banner.
how much $ is it to register opera?

If you think animated avatars like Jetmech's soak up a lot of browser CPU power, pull up THIS PAGE (http://www.7volts.com) and bring up the task manager to see how much CPU your browser is eating... That "water droplets" effect on the front page of that site really puts the twist on your CPU!!

I saw a cooling site that has a water effect about five time larger than that one. Never thought of the effect my avatars animation might be having on especially the slower system. I don't want to lose it all together but I'll check with the Avatar folks about killing the motion. Thanks for the heads up Gator.:)

The avatars are having minimal impact on my machine right now. The biggest effect happens when I am actively using my machine. IOW the human interface(mouse, keyboard, active use) appears to draw the most processing power while I'm surfing. If I just let it sit there it bounces between 0 and 3%
I am using ie6
That water page used 99% of my cpu though. There is something wrong with that. It's a java applet and I couldn't help thinking that maybe that site is using the applet for a distributed computing project that lets calculations run on visitors computers via the applet. OR did they do that on purpose just to use your cpu?

Thanks Ploaf. I am very fond of that avatar. I spanked those jets on the backside everyday for 12 years and now I can only see them on visitors day which is once a year (he wipes tears from his eyes). :D I wouldn't hesitate to kill it though if thats what the team needed.
While I must admit that the water effect on that page sure looks cool, it is crazy that it takes 100% CPU. Does anyone have a powerful enough CPU that it doesn't load it 100%?
I am running a Tbird @ 1.4 and it loaded 100%.

I think what we are seeing is what the chip makers have been saying all along. The faster the chip the better the access. Web programming has become very cpu intensive.

Uh ...
I'm running a Celly 800 ... @ 800 ... and IE 5.1 SP 2 ...
It ran it up to 79% on open ... up to 85% when I ran my mouse through the water (Ooooooo! Pretty! :D )
I'll ... uhm ... just ... sit here ... and be quiet ... now.

Win98 1st Ed, with many, MANY patches and fixes downloaded.
well it is interesting how the code executes on different systems. my 100% loading was on a tbird1.4 w/ win xp pro & ie 6.0.2600

I'm also running a USB optical (explorer) mouse ... it seems to be easier on the resources. Maybe I'm just imagining things. :D
Aside - does anyone else wonder when we'll see the "Explorer Keyboard", "Explorer Monitor", "Explorer Speakers", "Explorer Mousepad" ... etc. :p

Jetmech -- I don't believe any of the forum avatar's were using enough CPU to worry about, yours was fine, I just gave it as an example of an "animated" one since it was the nearest example at hand.
fyi - your new non-animated one is a nice shot too.
As for that "water droplet" java applet, that's part of a shareware package called "Anfy" (http://www.anfyteam.com/) which provides a number of similar effects, and which runs at low priority, soaking up whatever idle CPU cycles are available - much like FAH does. The author of the "7volts" (http://www.7volts.com) website has a statement posted under his "log" link dated June 9, 2001 that explains his use of the applet. Viewed on my #1 machine, it looks like those "water bugs" are on afterburner!!
:D

I have been looking for a clearer pic for some time and frankly that rise and fall in the old one did get boring over time. Dago mention in a pm to me the other night the sea sick feeling it gave. Anyway that motivated me to look (finally) for something better. A post to the avatar sticky resulted in the cool pic I have now. Thanks IdeaMagnate and everyone else who motivated me to get the job done. That is one beautiful flying machine.
