View Full Version : Chucked a PS3 on the team

So, I'm new to folding (SETI cruncher by trade), but I recently bought a 60gb backwards compatible PS3 (old model, none of that watered down slim crap :p) purely for FF13 (not much of a gamer)...

Initially installed linux to test out the only available PS3 client for SETI, ran like absolute crap, so now her idle cycles go to folding :)

Out of interest, is there anything else I need to do other than install Life for Playstation, then change Donor name to Careface and Team to 32? No other secret performance enhancing settings to test out?

What about WU length and deadlines? I'm not too fussed about leaving it on overnight (have 2 rigs 24/7 on SETI), but that would be dependent on power usage (whats that like?)

Lastly, and perhaps not the least unimportant question - what kind of PPD would I be looking at for this beast? Prelim tests seem to show that it's about a bajillion times quicker than my dual core laptop I had folding for the team, so I guess it can't be too bad :)

Cheers, and happy folding guys and gals :)

:welcome: to the fold!

Let me see what I can remember off the top of my head, its been a while. PPD usually runs around 900, but we have seen higher by running the advanced units. It may have only been an extra 100-150 PPD though. Power draw will be around 200W while folding, but it may even be lower.

You will also want to find the advanced settings and turn music off, and I always made it a point to turn screensaver mode off as well, which may increase the PPD by a bit. Other than that, there isn't really much to it. I used to have mine on auto start as well, so if the console sat idle for 10 minutes, it would jump right into folding. Hope this helps.:beer:

Welcome to the fole Careface. About time we saw some of that banded snake, over here! :D

The PS3 is a faster folder than any PC, BUT it had to have it's points set lower than it was worth, because it was such a slap in the face to the PC folders, when it first came out.
