this is probably a dumb question i have a dell studio xps 8000 im very happy i don't game at all or overclock. it gets the job done and cheaply, now my question is it has a ati graphics card it came with a dvi, hdmi, and vga port i currently have the hdmi hooked up to my dell display i would like to hook up computer to my tv which doesn't have anything fancy on it. i do have component rgb there are adaptors that i was wondering could i use such as http://cgi.ebay.com/6-FT-VGA-to-3-RCA-Component-Cable-For-PC-RGB-LCD-HDTV_W0QQitemZ370271256630QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_De faultDomain_0?hash=item5635e30036 in the listing and similar ones online thay state NOTE: Specific TV-out feature on video card is required, please check with your video card output specification for compatibility how can i tell if my dell ati card can do this or what would be the most cost effective way to get video to my tv for the occasional divx movie, or family albums. etc...

component and RGB are 2 different things, that with the VGA to RGB adaptor wont work on component input on a TV, you'd need a DVI to component adaptor.

if your wanting to run the TV as a monitor figure out weither its component OR RGB
just because the connectors are red green and blue does not mean that its RGB.
if its a LCD tv then its most likely component, if its a Tube tv i wouldnt even bother
but check the specs, mabe give us a model number on what kind of tv it is

TV specs:*link* (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=1&langId=-1&productId=11038115&SR=sony_search_seo&SQS=KD-36FS170%20FD#specifications)

wow i didnt think any one bought one of these digital tube tv's, in the specs its saying the "native res" is 480i, i dont imagine it'll go much above it but it wont get all funky like it does with LCDs (chunky looking and such)

you'll need something like this DVI to Component cable (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10235&cs_id=1023504&p_id=2508&seq=1&format=2) it should just plug in and windows should see it as a generic display

i've herd good things about monoprice but i havent ever ordered any thing from them
