How do I overclock a GeForce2 MX 400 with TV out. I go to the clock fequencies section and it says that I need to restart my comp to enable the overclocking. When I get back in after a reboot the thing is still locked. :( How do i get this open to overclock or what tricks do you guys know to get better preformance out of this card. I only get 1528 marks on 3D mark 2000 and I have 256 megs ram and a 900mhz processor. :( I should get more than that for a score. :(

i dont think overclocking will help you m8 .. 1500 you say? on an old celeron 566 @ 850 i was getting much better scores than that

What drivers are you using and what system spec you have would help .

Your best asking this in the Video and Sound Card Section.

You should get an alternative like: PowerStrip, NVMax, or Rivatuner.

You can't overclock without enabling Coolbits which enables you to overclock from that thing.

Yes, get powerstrip or one of the others that Yodums mentioned.
That program works reasonably well.

I don't understand. What is Coolbits? What is PowerStrip, NVMax, etc.? Is this necessary for OCing?

Ok I don`t get it, are these vid cards locked so you can`t clock them? I got the stuff mentioned above and I still can`t get the overclocking to work. :( is there a Reg setting I need to do. I got coolbits and put that in and I got NVTweak and Rivatuner and I can`t seem to find PowerStrip as a free downlaod. :( I really wanna clock this card, I heard good things about clocking these cards. :)

someone has gotta know something about this card. :D

I'm pretty sure you OC the PCI bus which makes data transfer faster. If I'm wrong, then...I'm wrong. But, that's my understanding...

I'm sorry, the video card is on the AGP bus. So, you would OC that (along with the PCI bus)...

To get to the agp bus do i go into my mainboard. If so I can try it, if not im screwed.

I think when you raise the FSB (or OC) you raising all of the ports (the AGP, PCI, etc.). So, when you raise the FSB you are ocing the video card. Like I said before, this is my understanding of OCing. If I'm wrong, please tell me.

ok, i understand now :D I have my fsb at 112 mhz. i`ll drop it down to the stock 66 mhz and see if i loosed pn performance. . i f i do i can just turn it up a bit. :D I can only go as high as 133mhz on the fsb but i`ll mess with it. Thanks for the info :D

You're wrong :p

He wants to over clock his graphic card not his CPU. Raising the FSB would increase the speed of the processor, not the video card. To overclock (OC) his graphic card he has to get "coolbits" to load properly.

Sounds to me like there may be some problems with your registry. Try a program like system mechanic to clean up your registry file then fire up NVmax and give it a try. I had similar problems before, and this cleared it up for me.

Another thing I would try is a clean install of you're Detenator drivers. step-by-step:
1: unzip the drivers you wish to use to a temp directory (C:\temp)
2: uninstall current drivers. REBOOT.
3: when you're computer reboots it should ask you were the drivers are select "search for a better driver".
4: click on "browse" and point it to the temp directory you made earlier and install those drivers.
5: once the installation of the drivers is complete it may ask you to reboot, if it does. reboot.
6: install "coolbits"
7: go into your display settings and enable overclocking. Restart when it prompted you to do so.
8: Check to see if the overclocking options are greyed out.

Let me know if this works for you.

What are coolbits!? Can somebody explain this, please?

>> He wants to over clock his graphic card not his CPU. <<
Wouldn't the AGP bus overclock with the FSB?

While raising the FSB speed would increase overall performance. He is asking how to OC his graphic card. This would be done by raising the mhz. that it runs at. This is done by using coolbits.

Coolbits is a registry hack. It opens up a hidden panel in the Detenator Drivers that allows the speed (mhz) that the graphic card runs at to be adjusted. EDIT: This has nothing to do with the FSB.

Hope that answers you're question Garfield.

I've been having good reslts with the ones on the nvidia site.

So how/where do you get Coolbits? Is it software just to raise the mhz of the video card?

So, when you OC, you "raise" the speed of everything (including the video card), right? Or, you can choose to OC just one port/device, right? And to just OC the CPU, you raise the multiplier. I guess I have it figured out. Thanks! :D

You can find coolbits almost every were these days. Just look around.

As for you're confusion of OCing...that's another thing.
For starters. Graphic cards can be overclocked by simply instructing the card to run at a higher speed. Coolbits allows this to be done. This only holds true for Graphic Cards.

CPU's are different. CPU's use a multiplier and the FSB to gauge speed. A CPU can therefore be overclocked in two ways. Unlocking the multiplier, or raising the FSB. As of now only AMD processor's can have the multiplier unlocked by bridging the L1 cache. Or you can raise the FSB which in turn gives you a boost.

So let's review, multiplier of 10 on a system with a 100mhz FSB. That gives us a 1.0ghz processor speed. Nudge the FSB up to 133mhz. to make that CPU run at 1.3ghz.

I hope the above information was clear enough for you. If not feel free to ask more questions :)
