I have a PIII 1 gig Intel processor and I'm having random lockups.
My pc makes a very loud and ugly noise when my pc is running.
Is my processor getting too hot? I have changed coolers 3 times already without improvement. :-(
Is there any way to test my processor if it is causing these lockups?

Have you tried a different power supply?

Check you voltages: I recently had a similar problem, still not sure of the actual cause, but my VP6 mobo ended up burning a trace!

My 12v line was reading 15v but the psu tested at 12, so I just watched: temps were climbing, and one day: crash no reboot. Burnt trace; luckily nothing else was hurt, but the board will only run at default speed now:( was dual 1000@1150.

my previous power supply went up in smoke so they placed a new one but I do not know if they put the right one.
my power supply says:
Model: 300 ATX
115V/230V 7/4A
60/50Hz AC
is this good enough for a Intel PIII 1 gig ?
How can I change the volt settings if that is possible? And how do I know how much volt is needed?

I also just checked where that ugly noise came from. It's my cooler that causes it. It is a brand new cooler tho. I got it 2 days ago.

Should be good enough, but some people have problems with power supplies ( more common with AMD stuff). I tend to be cheap, and run cheap psus- most common problem I've had is low +5v lines( usually AMD and when the voltage is under 4.75/4.8). MotherBoardMonitor is a very popular utility for voltages, temps and fan speeds; there's a link on the front page under utilities I think.

My pc makes a very loud and ugly noise when my pc is running.

Did anybody read this??

Remove the case from your computer and fire it up....Make sure the CPU fan is spinning. A surge from the faulty PCU may have blown up the fan and you are experiencing temperature related lockups.

If the fan is not operating then you need a new fan.

Part of Fluids idea but, open up the case see if wires are being grinded in the fan or not then use a multimeter and check the voltages of your PSU.

I checked my fan and it is spinning when I run my pc ...but maybe too slow ? no idea
There are no wires damaged by the fan.
I am getting desperate. I tried allmost everything...
graphics card, audio card, ram, mobo, ethernet cards, power supply,... I changed them all. I allmost baught me a whole new pc part by part but that annoying lockup problem just won't go away. What is the problem en what can I do to fix it?

Also... what is a multimeter? Where can I get a multimeter? What does a multimeter cost? ...

The ugly noises coming from the cpu fan sounds like the bearing going out on the fan, which would cause it to run too slow and not cool the proc. What kind of hsf are you running? You can get a good quality hsf for your proc for less than $20 online and if the heatsink is a good one, you can just replace the fan for around $10.
Reading your second post, I see that you just bought the hsf. Bring it back to where you bought it because the fan is defective.
