View Full Version : Free decent PC games?

I was just wondering what games are available for the PC that are freely available (legally of course). I don't really have to money to buy games for my PC, so my 22" 1080p monitor is sitting relatively unused, compared to the 24" tube TV at 480p with over $1000 of console games sitting beside it.
Ideally I'm looking for relatively decent looking games, and I like the old NFS racing games (from Hot pursuit to carbon were the ones I liked, everything else I'm not a fan of). I also will play RPG's shooters, and so on. Thanks in advance.

there was just a post on that recently...do a quick search, as it might be faster than a reply here. ;)

I did see that thread, but it included all of three games, none of which really piqued my interest.

Personally...I always look for mods for the games I already have.

I don't yet own any games for PC, I've had it all of 4 months now, and since then the only thing I've bought was my monitor.......
as I said in my first post, I enjoy racing games, but the more casual street racing type, along with RPG's and some shooters, though I usually play shooters on my 360.

The only open source game I have is frets on fire, which defenitely did not earnm it's place on my drive, and was promptly uninstalled. The only reason I got it was because a) i wanted to test out the drivers for my 360 guitars and drum kit, and b) it was the only free game i could think of.

ok that's a cool game. It looks a little gimmicky, but the gameplay makes up for it.
It's exactly my type of game, good, competetive, but with very casual physics, none of the over-realistic crap like forza, or the new NFS games. thanks.

Track Mania is amazing. Me and some friends use to play the crap out of that. One night we were playing on some German server, and it had this crazy song playing. Looked at what it was, and it was this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqJCRs23TJ8) song. The YouTube video is definitely worth a watch, it's highly entertaining.

Moddb.com might have some cool mods that don't really require other games.

I use to get PC Gamer magazines and they use to come with all kinds of demos that I'd have just as much fun playing as the actual game so you could find some free demo downloads.. I've been having a blast playing battlefield 2 again that's only 20$ and age of empires 2 which it and all the add-ons are only 10$ at wal-mart.. caugh up a little cash for alot of fun if ya ask me.

No one mentioned Quake Live (quake 3 played through your browser) or Battlefield Heroes, EA's free game that I believe was somewhat similar to TF2. Both look like some great games for the 0 dollar.

if you can get yourself past the blatant recuitment propaganda the original was worth about a week of play out of me. I have no idea whats become of the franchise in the last two iterations but it was a professionally done free multiplayer FPS. AA3 was released about 6 months ago so it cant be that outdated yet.
*edit* oops looks like someone beat me to the punch.

If you like to do RTS. Warzone 2100 (http://wz2100.net/). One of the few games I play on Linux regularly besides mines and mahjong.
If you like shooters.. Nexuiz (http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/). One of the rare chances for a free game and get to duke it out with Linux users. The other is Open Arena (http://openarena.ws/smfnews.php).
All the games I linked are multi platform.
fear and enemy territory are decent i've been addicted to track mania's impossible skilled tracks. I too love the german server i played on. those tracks just have you going faster and faster and more tricks in a row. (it's fun to dust the noobs, try to hide the true way to do the trick)
if you want some cheap games you should really sign up for steam and wait for the year end holiday sales. they have like 75% discount.
