View Full Version : Try this to test speed!

Several days ago I found a site that consistently benches 400-500kB/s while most other bandwidth meter sites do no more than 250kB/s or so.

Somebody try benching through it and let me know if it gives a realistic figure for you; interesting to know if it's a buggy java piece or just really fast/close with my ISP's backbone.

Here's what my results looks like. For reference, I consistantly score 1300 to 1450 on DSLREPORTS test to the MegaPath Test server. In case the picture doesn't post, I scored 414.

Any time I have asked friends in the business that same question, the stock reply is, "It's all in the ROUTE and the TRAFFIC between you and any particular test site". I don't know for sure, but sounded believable to me!

My DirecPC posted at 110. It does better than that usually. Around 250 for streaming mpegs and such.

Man, that's got to be the only thing I miss about living in the city, though....cable modems.

WOW! Mines really slow compared to you guys! I've actually only have a 768k download speed. that's the fastest my isp allows. :(
But it gets the job done for me. The thing I hate the most is the 128k upload speed. I do a lot of file transfers. It really hold's things up.

You were right when you said that your speed wil varry depending on where the test server is. on my Charter service they get me a link to their server that is still within the cable network to run a test download. once you leave the providers network it all depends on the routers and switches you encounter on your way to the test web page. my score seemed about 45kbit/s high

This test is one of the least reliable that I have encountered. I get speeds all over the chart depending on when I try. Other tests, like at dslreports, tend to be more consistent.

and I thought that I was the only one !!

It also changes the way u log on ( DSL guys only ) and creates a heck of a problem.

sigh.... only getting 63. cox@home seems to be muuch slower since they changed management. And the new software really made no difference at all in performance. :(

That test isn't worth anything :P

Tracert

I personally like this one, but it is on the West Coast but I think they must have a great connection to a fatty backbone. They seem very reliable.

Try it (http://www.bandwidthspeedtest.com)

I couldn't use the test at cable-modem.net for some reason but I was able to try out bandwidthspeedtest.com as Tracert reccomended. I tried it a bunch of times and I got from a low of 800Kb to a high of 1.2Mb a sec.
