View Full Version : my cooling setup
hey guys im slightly new at this so if u could help me that would be helpful. right now im using the standard heatsink fan provided with my amd 1.4 ghz and im running about about 43c idle and 49c load. i wanted to get the volcano 7 soon and was wondering what u guys thought of it? i've heard mixed reviews about this. ive heard its good/bad and loud/quiet?
also i was also planning on adding the panasonic panaflow 120mm to the side of my case to add extra cooling. what are your reviews on this? it says that it comes with just bare wires or i can get the molex connector for extra $$. which one do i buy? when i mount it to the side of my case, would i just need to drill holes for the screws? or would i have to drill an entire hole through the case to maximize airflow and get the 120mm grill?
sorry for all the questions. if no one replies i guess thats what i get for being a newbie. anything would help thanks.

please list what kind of processor you have and what type of case. these are helpful in deciding what to put on as far as a heatsink. also what other equip do you have or expect to add.
give this info and someone can make a suggestion.

If you want a good air cooled setup go with the Swiftec 462 or the alpha pal 8045. These are both great coolers. Be sure to lap the surface of them. You will need to cut a hole in the side of your case for the large 120 fans to be effective. I have a friend who did one yesterday and it really dropped his temps. It is a little loud now but good cooling. Use a molex connector on the big fans and do NOT..... plug them into the MOBO fan connectors. The 120's draw about 1 amp of power and that will burn out the fan bus on the MOBO.
hope this helps you out.

I have the Swiftech MCX462 on my XP 1800+ cooling that with an 80 watt TEC module and a 68CFM Delta fan. It works great. The Swiftech factory puts a finish on their heat sinks that makes them flatter than anything else. You can actually do more harm than good by lapping them, so if you get one then don't waste your time. I have an Alpha PAL8045 on my tbird with a 50CFM Sunon fan, and that cools well too. I didn't lap it but you might want to....I didn't see any rough marks in the base at all though.
Both of these coolers are great. They both bolt to the motherboard and are large, using 80mm fans, so they have much more mass and surface area than other coolers. Plus they use larger, more powerful fans that don't generate a ton of noise for their airflow.
Welcome to the oc.com forums, I hope we'll be able to help ya out!
They have pretty much covered it so I'll just drop "Welcome aboard".
