Customers laptop needs new mobo , its old, well AMD 1.9 old, and its 200 plus shipping . Now I would like to do the job , but after installing Win7 and the repair , she would be at the cost of a new laptop.

So the question is 4gb of DDR2 or 3gb of DDR3 ? That is the only thing I am up in the air about . Now for future I know the DDR3 is the wiser choice , well here are my options that I am going to present to the customer :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834107043

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115728

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146610

so from those options what would you recommend? I know there are many other lappy's but those are the ones I am choosing to present .

2 come with win7 variety
1 with XP and funny its the one with DDR3 go figure

HD speed doesnt matter , itsa a surfing infront of the tv lappy , some music , some pics , but general surfing is main purpose . Lan , she is not going to buy a new router so N doesnt matter .

oh and she has keys missing on current broken lappy , just the down arrow and Pg DN , and only has 512mb DDR.

220 mobo shipped
100 labor
60 for OS

so she is at 380 and she still has keys missing old laptop

input ?

thanks

Hey silent bob! How goes?

I would give that old laptop a much needed axe treatment! That's just too much money to spend on an old beater. How's the battery life on it? With something that old and needing that much work it would greatly hinge on how good the battery is. If that battery doesn't hold much of a charge anymore there is no way in hell I would drop a dime into that turd. Plus it needs new keys, and she probably won't be too happy when her old laptop's hard drive kicks the bucket in a few months, lol.

Of the three replacements you posted I like the Lenovo the best, I've seen that laptop in person and its a nice looking, solid, machine; reviews I've read on that system say it is solid enough you could practically stand on it. But $500 is a bit on the expensive side for those specs. One up and coming laptop brand that doesn't get a whole lot of recognition is msi. From a quality standpoint I think they're in the same league as Acer, msi is a little higher quality, the enticing thing about msi is that they include a 3 year manufacturer warranty. That might be something to look into.

That Lenovo G550 is a very good laptop, I came very close to buying one myself. The biggest downfall of the G550 is that it lacks features the previous G530 model had, such as the ExpressCard slot and it loses one USB port compared to the previous model, but it has a built-in 10-key pad. What turned me off of the G550 is the integrated intel graphics, that won't matter for what she plans to do. 3 GB of RAM will be fine if she's running Win7 32-bit, and I believe that's the version that comes with those laptops.

I really don't think her laptop is worth putting money into. She's better off to spend the extra $100 or so it will cost to get a new machine. The manufacturer's warranty and brand new battery alone are worth the extra money. If she's interested in spending as little as possible she should look for a used laptop on craigslist or ebay. Dump that old turd. :D

well she did do 1 thing right , since it sat next to a couch and always plugged in , the battery has only been charged like 3 or 4 times and then pulled .I am in full agreeance to get another lappy , I could use the money , but then I am no better than the corporate box stores who would gladly rebuild it .
MSI , is that the mobo manufacturer? Good for them trying to break into the laptop market !!
They are a little more pricey , and looking at almost 750 for a 15.6" screen. If this was her main I would go higher but she has a desktop, and phone with internet so the lappy is just ..well....overkill .
