I have 1 comp with 98se and the other with XP
Both networked on my linksys 4 port router...
all was fine untill today, the 98se machine still works fine (so far) but when ever I try and access the 98 machine with the XP it takes for ever to access the shared files from it.
Everthing on the XP that has to do with networkin seems to be really slow for some reson...
I had disabled some services today, but enabled them again thinkin that could of been the problem, but it wasn't.
Also I set it to auto save the password to log onto the 98comp from the XP, thats when the slow down seemed to happen,
Anyone remeber how to clear password lists?
I dunno y that it would cause as slow down, but maybe that could be it by some slim chance :P
Any ideas?

I feel for you. I just posted my problem a couple of minutes ago that I recently "networked" my 98 and XP machines. I seem to be having somewhjat the opposite problem. My XP sees the 98 machine but my 98 won't see thenetwork or the XP. Yet both get through to the internet through my D-Link 4 port wireless router.

Its getting slower too.
When I try and access the 98 comp is shows the lil flash light as if it's looking for files... and 2 min ltr it opens the files...
But still fast if I'm on th 98 lookin at the XP
I dont get it,
Really annoying

there must be some problem networking these OS's cause I'm having problems with xp and 98. The xp comp is host and doesnt see it or the win98 comp, the win98 comp sees itself and thats all though internet can still be accessed from it through sharing. I had the host using 2000 before and all was fine...:/

Well, I do NOT like XP for anything, but networking is cool- so I'll give it a shot. Getting rid of task scheduler (the tweak above) might help....sounds like there is more though.
#1 Workgroup names MUST be the same.
#2 File Sharing must be ENABLED for a pc to show up on the network
#3 DHCP can slow things down even if you do have a dhcp server (gateway routers can usually do it) I suggest static ips for any network fewer than 20 or 30 computers, even though it is a bit more work setting it up.
Those are the first things to check......If still no go, post again!

I disabled browse master on the 98se comp and now it's fine.
It's still a lil slow at first accessing the comp, but once u put the password in and get to the main drive it's fast.
But I still don't like XP, Boatware IMO. I'll be sliking it and puttin 2k on it =)
