View Full Version : winxp loses network after a router reset

I have a network of 3 computers, all running winxp. The connection works perfectly, except if the router gets reset (because it loses the DSL connection), a network plug on one of the computers is momentarily unplugged, or if a network reset happens on one of the machines. These result in WinXP being unable to see folders on the network. Each machine is still located in the network list, but there is no access beyond the list of available machines.
So far the only way to fix this situation is to reboot the remote computer, and then reboot the home computer. If I reboot in reverse order, then the network remains closed to the folder level.
Is there anyway to make WinXP reinitialze the network without rebooting?
It also loses the network list by just doing a repair on the network logo. The names of computers on the network are no longer available.

have you fiddle with your services? There are some services in XP that if you turn them off, the computer is unable to automatically update itself if something on the network changes.
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Network Location Awareness (NLA)
can all affect xp's ability to see other computers on the network if something changes/interrupts the network. make sure you haven't turned them off.

all set to manual, when enabled, nothing changed.

hmm... i'll hafta do some thinking then. i'd say that about 95% of the time, your issue is caused by people turning off those services trying to eek out another 1% on their benchmarks or they turn them off not knowing what they really do.
since making sure on those didn't do the issue, the next thing i'd check is to make sure the drivers of the nic aren't borked and causing the issue for whatever reason. Just uninstall the nic drivers, reboot, and see if the issue still happens after reinstall of the drivers.
If still happening, i'll hafta look up the netsh commands to find the right one... but there are a couple that are designed to rebuild the ip stack and such just in case of weird glitches like this that nothing else seems to solve.

I do not believe it is a physical layer issue. You still have network and internet access. However, the network shares themselves (software links) die until a reboot on both machines is done. Leads me to believe 100% a software issue. After ensuring that the proper services were not disabled, we need to ensure it isn't a driver issue, then after that, look at other settings it could possibly be
