I finally busted open the case on my ever-so-slightly OC'd PII 450 and got a little more serious with it's cooling. With the better HSF I was expecting cooler numbers. I was very wrong. I guess the old placement of the probe in conjunction with the case gave me very optimistic temps. The new temps were hovering arond the 40° mark.

I remembered seeing CpuIdle and installed it. If it is really working correctly I have two words for it It Rocks!

It dropped my temps as much as 10°. I have actually seen first thing in the morning where the CPU is cooler than the Mb.
 Prost Andreas.

CPUIdle is a nice tool indeed but it has one major disadvantage that I know of. The program disables the parts of the CPU that aren't used at the moment. This cuts down the power needs of the CPU and by doing that it decreases the heat dissipated in the CPU. This implies that the program is completely useless if you are using the entire CPU. CPUidle lowers the idle temps of the cpu but NOT the working temps.

I also think your temps are a bit high for an OC'd pII 450. My old 450 ran at 32 centigrade at 500 Mhz.

Personally I try to keep the idle and working temps as close as possible together. Somehow I don't like the ID of my CPU shrinking and expanding all the time due to temperature changes.

I may be wrong about the shrinking/expanding part... I someone likes to point it out to me, feel free :p

I agree quaky, cpuidle is a waste. What's the point of lowering the temp when you're not even using it? Plus, I do think the expanding/contracting of the die is an issue.

Besides (and I love when I get to plug this),

You should FOLD (http://www.overclockers.ws) anyway!

Right you are!

However, if you really want to cool your computer when idle, just turn it off!

I want to start off saying that the idled CPU being cooler makes complete sense and I agree with you. Reality seems to be a bit different here. In the first place I don't know if my thermister reads high or not. However, since the shell was removed I was able to place the probe right up to the edge of the chip. I'm running a Vantec P3D-5030 HSF. It's supposed to be a quality unit. I don't think the high temp is for lack of HSF. What all this leads me to wonder is how many 30° chips out there really are running at 30°? But that's another discussion. :D

I think the temp thing is all kind of relative. My chip originally ran @ 40° and the CpuIdle cut it down to 30° for a 10° drop. One side effect I've noticed is my temp remains in the ~32° range (according to MBM5) with me actively using the computer. Right now I have 2 websites (this one and one other), Word, Outlook and lastly my Media Player cranking tunes while I'm typing this.

It works for me.
