I recently took a HDD from an 386-class PC and took the cover off. I hooked it up to an old PSU and it started spinning and "checking". :burn: It's a pretty good sight but it would be a lot better if I had somekind of a circuit or device to randomly move the spindle of the HDD. Can any1 suggest how I should make this?

sorry to tell u man but u basically ruined the hard drive because just one spec of dust will crash the harddrive header (or whatever its called). Thats why most harddrives are made in a vacum where there is no dust.

Wait, ur not gonna use it for data, ur just gonna use it for display right? oK forget the post up above. Best bet would be just to add a low rpm motor and a device called a flipper (i think thats what its called) what a flipper does is it takes the electricity sends it in one direction and then reverses it and sends it to another direction, kinda how wind shiled wipers work.

I'm just going to use it for display only and I knew I ruined the HD because yes I'm only 15 but I know how "fragile" they are. Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like a cool idea. I'd add in a 5V flashing led, and have it reflect off the platter. Windshield wipers for the most part do not reverse the voltage to the motor, to get them to travel in the opposite direction. Here's how most wipers work. (http://www.howstuffworks.com/wiper.htm)
