I'm wanting to jump on board and start folding on my laptop overnight and maybe 24/7 on my ps3 since I don't play that much. The only problem is I'm down in Australia at the moment and our net plans have capped data. Uploads aren't counted. What can I expect as far as data usage from contacting and downloading from the servers?

I would stick with the ps3 leave the laptop out of the mix unless you have a cooler for it and even then I might still shy away from it(what kind is it?)
the actual ps3 application is 50mb
I found this floating around the net
"The download for each WU is about 250-500KB the upload 1.5-2.5MB make a test run how many WUs the machines finish a day and you will see."
I looked here but didn't see anything that popped out at me for wu size download and uploads. I'm sure ChasR or someone else can shed some light on the subject.
Welcome aboard.

It really depends on the laptop... You can't just stereotype them all as being unable to fold. I had a 30% overclock on my laptop and have run it 24/7 (without an external cooler) with no heat issues whatsoever. It really depends on the design and the chip it's got. Let's find out the specs before we say one way or another ;) There is that flag you can set so it won't fold on battery afterall... ;)

Fine! make me look like a short horse like creature:rock: :D
honestly I wouldn't fold on a laptop even if it was capable.. I might change my mind if I had an i7 laptop sitting here but I don't :D
I'm sticking by the notion that you hurt my feelings http://pinklea.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/donkey.jpg
It's ok though we will let you stay around.
so lets hear it brent.

It's just an older midrange Dell. Even when the CPU is maxed out watching HD movies it doesn't get that hot, plus the computer is usually on at night working on downloads using offpeak data, so why not fold a little too?
Sounds like the data download is small and since upload aren't counted I think I'll start a week trial run on my ps3 and see how my data's affected. I'll be sure to join this team for it too. Thanks for the quick replies.
edit: Just got it set up and started folding on the ps3!
Do you know the exact specs of the laptop?
I've folded on every laptop I've owned. The only problem I've encountered attributable to folding is the cpu heatsink fan wears out early.

I could look up the specs, but its not worth it. I decided just not to fold on it because it doesn't have much power behind it. It's not even my laptop. I had a tower I just built and couldn't afford a laptop when I moved to Japan so my mom just gave me her run of the mill dell... and since I've lived abroad since I haven't had the need, or a chance really to pick up a new laptop. That will change in July when I get back! [/offtopic]
I am folding on my PS3, and when I get home I'll probably fold on my old tower. It's one of the old school AMD 64 chips. I don't remember it's specific name but it was from the original AMD 64 line. Cost me almost $600 when I bought it. Any idea if that's got enough HP to fold? I'll probably throw XP Pro on that machine with no monitor and just remote desktop in. If it can't fold maybe a file server. Hmmm...
Edit: looked up my OOOOOLD order on newegg. This is the chip:
