View Full Version : Getting ready to rock and roll, baby!
ALLRIGHT!!
Finally, the stuff is coming together!
The new main is up and running;
AMD XP1800+ @ 1.7GHz
The 2nd string is ready to format the hard drive, and start installing the OS, etc...;
AMD T-Bird 1.4 @ 1.533GHz
The 3rd string (damn...used to be my main in the 1st week of October...lol) is under construction ATM....
intel P/// 700E @ 933-968MHz
I've just got a 5 port network switch, and now have enough NIC's to pull this off, I think...;)
If so, tomorrow morning, I'll try my hand at networking while the wife is at work...with a bit of luck, this will be rockin' before the game starts....:p (I live in New England, so I've got more than a passing interest in tomorrow's big game...;) )
If so...4+GHz will be Folding@home (right now, just the main is Folding) !!
Rock and roll..... :burn:
Fold ON!!
sweet. patriots are going to lose though.

Good luck on the networking. I personally hate it. I got my 2 comp network going but i hope you have more luck in getting it right the first 1-3 times than i did ;) GJ on the folding farm!

And rock and roll you will. Nice farm Mr. B. Will you use VNC or KVM switch to monitor?

Sweet, B....
Now that my roommates finally got the cash to pay our phone/DSL bill I'm back up with my 3 rigs and my one Yatta rig... I gotta break 1K wu soon...
Hopefully my dual Duron system will be functional within 2 weeks as well.... (Come on Epox!! Get that M762A out there!!)
Been futzing around with it most of the evening....cannot get this network to work...:(
Well, tomorrow...I'll figger this stuff out eventually....

I know this may be a "duh" but are your network cables all OK Mr. B? As in, do you have a loopback tester to test them with or something along that line?
My roommate had trouble with connecting his computer to the school network a while back... he tried like 4 or 5 NIC's until he discovered his network cable was bad....
And are you using a broadband router or just a plain jane switch? (i.e. do you need a portal computer) My DSL/Cable router was super easy to set up here at my house and works like a dream.
Glad to hear your getting more rigs folding. So now that you have tried AMD for awhile how do you like Them? We know they fold faster but how are they doing for everything else?
Well, the setup is:
(Internet)----->(Main rig/main NIC (in))-->(Main rig/2nd NIC (out)--->Linksys EZXS55W 5 port 10/100 Switch------->(other rigs/each with NIC) Right now, there's just the main and 2nd rig, and the 3rd is still awaiting completion)
All running WinME.
What sees to be holding me back, is one file, that being the "Internet Connection Sharing", in the "Communications" part of the WinME setup. I just swapped mobo's from under Windows (w/o formatting...rolled the dice...seems ok but for this one problem...:( ) I was running the "networking" thru the old mobo's (MSI K7T266 Pro) PC USB to USB program.
Anyways, now when I go to install ICS on my main, this comes up as being the problem. A certain device driver fails to load (I can't recall the name, didn't write it down, and ain't gonna go "get it", as I'll lose me internet connection by doing so again...) but it has to do with the ICS itself..
This installed just fine on the 2nd rig (just formatted yesterday). I formatted the drive in the main about two months ago, and haven't installed the bulk of what I would usually, as I knew I would be doing all of this upgrading shortly (new mobo/cpu, swapping boards and drives around, etc...)
I've just saved all of the stuff I want to keep to a folder on my desktop...gonna burn it to CDRW shortly, and format the drive in the main. I think formatting/reinstalling Windows will do the trick. (I tried to reinstall over the existing installation last night, with no luck).
So...that's where I am. I spent a few hours last night, going thru the Windows Networking Troubleshooter, and pretty much narrowed it down to that one file. I think it's all screwy from the previous mobo swaps, and running the network thru the USB, etc...
Besides, I've got 600+ e-mails in my "inbox" that I've been too lazy to delete...this will kill 'em all in one shot...:p
BTW, Kendan...words cannot express what an XP does for Folding...lol.
I'm still in the top 30 on the team, and have only had the main (XP) rig Folding for the last two to three weeks! Imagine the boost I'll get once I can get this network setup, and throw a 1.4 @ 1.533 T-Bird, and the P/// on top of that! :D

I'm pretty sure it will work after a format, I've had problems with ICS too, and no matter what I did, after reboot the settings were the same as before:mad: , I tried everything I could think of....swap NIC's , remove them in system properties....you name it, I've tried it.
Format and fresh install did the trick:)
Got it!!! :D
2 down, one to go.... Setting that one up now...:)
**edit* 3 for 3. :)
Main at 1533
2nd at 1400
3rd at 933
Gonna run 'em there, and watch the temps for a while, before I crank 'em up.
3.866GHz...comin at ya! :burn:

Linksys EZXS55W 5 port 10/100 Auto-sensing Switch
That's the same one I have!
Are you using the Sygate internet server software?
It came with mine.

Nope..good ol' MS Networking...lol. I had the CAT 5 cables hooked up wrong going to the switch. The software end of it was fine after all....*sigh*
I needed a format anyways...keeps me busy. :)
**just looked...since I got them fired up at 5:30 (5 hours ago);
The Main is now on it's 3rd WU
The 2nd is just finishing it's 2nd WU
The 3rd is on frame 76 of 100 of it's first WU
Almost a WU an hour. DAYUM! :D
Loooking good Mr B Can't wait to see the results. :D

That is impressive. I'll be lookin' for you in my rear view.
All mine are running Win98 and it wouldn't work without the server software. I could plug the modem and all of the computers into the switch, but then the computers could not see each other. That's the way I originally had it, but got tired of not being able to share files. How do you hook cables up wrong?
Well, there's six ports on the back of the switch. I assumed that the line out of the main rig to the switch went into the "uplink" port. No good.
As soon as I plugged it into the #1 port, and moved the line going from the switch to #2 to the #2 port...bingo!
I then plugged rig 3 into #3, and that worked first try.
I don't quite understand it...I just know it's finally working...:p
I can access all three rigs right from my desktop, all three can access the net, and all three are Folding away. I've yet to see any new WU's in my score though... Waiting for the next update.... I know I got the username and team number typed in right....:(

The new one just came out on statsman. You got 2 points. Bound to just keep going up!!!
I forgot about that 6th port. It's for plugging your modem in if your modem doesn't have a crossover switch. It's kinda like, if you hook 2 computers together with just a network cable, nothing inbetween, it has to be a cross over cable, not just a regular network cable.
Yea the uplink port is to hook it to another switch or router or hub.

The online manual I found didn't explain that...lol. So, naturally, I assumed that "uplink" is where the line out of the 2nd NIC in the main to the switch should go....
Wrong! ;)
Fortunately, I figured that out enough before kickoff yesterday, that I was able to get all three rigs set up and Folding....:p
But, now I get to start reinstalling all of the games and apps tonite...*sigh*
You can use the "Uplink" Port to connect to another Hub/Switch, but it "shares" with the 1st port, so if you use the uplink port don't forget to move a line off of port #1.
I had an ME computer sharing a DSL connection with my XP machine for a while, it was definately flaky. Now I got XP on all four rigs and the sharing couldn't be easier. I just made sure each rig was on the lan when I installed XP and it did it all by itself.
Now I gotta get me an AMD...

Cool beans, Mr. B....
Dang, I'm gonna have to build another box now... I graphed our outputs together on Statsman and you're gonna pass me in 3 weeks at the current pace.... :)
So expect dual Durons or Dual XP's coming atcha sometime soon.. :) I might not even wait till I have the cash for an all new box. I'll probably wind up cannibalizing my good videocard from my current machine, not to mention some other parts.

Sickboy, it doesn't even have to be a good vid card. I stuck old 4 meg pci cards in my durons. Hey, it's enough for a folding box!

I bumped this sucker to warn you guys. Mr. B is wide open (currently 18pts/day) and I see a hold bunch of folks about to get gobbled up. Time for everybody ahead of MR. B to put another XP online. I don't know if we can ever catch AU but it's darn sure fun trying. Fold On Mr. B.  :burn:

ROTF...:D
Thanks for noticing...=)
I'm trying to figure out how I can swing the $$ for another socket A mobo, and put this other T-Bird I have on the shelf into the mix (1.0 that does 1.5+).
I'll probably replace the P/// rig at first, until I can get another case, etc to rebuild it...
Won't happen soon though.....maybe by the first of summer.
Come on Mr. B lets see what you can do. I just added a couple of rigs and I am about to start moving on up. I couldn't lose my spot in the top 30. Now just to see how far I can go!!!!

Just picked up a case today to put my 1.2 duron into. Got an SX830 Antec workstation tower for $85.00. This thing is sweet. Won't go into detail here but by morning I hope to be using Folding to burn-in. OOps break time is over. Back to work:D. What a job:beer:  :burn:
