Is there a way to do this without backingup everything?
Reason for asking is the other night I was cleaning out some programs and went to restart and bam blue screen saying
something about the reg being missing or corrupted.I tried everything, safe mode (samething),Last know boot (samething)
Even Tried the xp cd on startup and used the repair console with no luck. I wound up reformatting and starting over.
Thanks

I had the same problem a few times. I tried NT 4's rdisk, but no luck. The only thing I can think of is boot the command consol, and then you manually make a copy of windows\system32\config. Hope it works. Yea, I know how much reinstalling sucks.

u should be able to go to the run box and type
regedit
then when it opens:
regestry\export regestry file

select the all option and give your backup a name and it will save a copy of the the entire registry to your desktop
to restore just click on it
you can also export(save) any portion of your regestry from 1 key to all

In addition to "turd's" excellent suggestion AFA exporting the entire Registry, you can also backup the registry using the following "manual" method...

Open [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | System | CotnrolSet001 | Control | HiveList] with the System Registry Editor. This key shows you the locations of all the files that make up the registry on your PC. Make copies of NTUSER.DAT, USRCLASS.DAT, and all the hive files to create a full backup.;)

System Restore? That backs up the registry does it not?

It does, but there are so many bugs in System Restore...I don't think I would rely on it solely to restore the Registry in case of system failure. There are also so many variables involved in the operation of the SR utility, it makes me believe in using the backup utility supplied with XP Pro...or if using the Home version, purchasing a shareware version of a decent backup program that will work with XP (Backup isn't included with the XP Home version) and using SR in conjunction with these.;)

I have never had a problem with it...

Thanks guys I did a backup the way turd said and the way redduc900 said. Thanks again ! I also put in a second HD to put all my files on that need to be saved:) So now if all else fails I just
have to reinstall windows and a few programs, and not worry about if I backed something up or not.
Thanks again:beer:
