View Full Version : CDROM Drive Not working after MOBO Swap!

I have an old Gateway Destination Station. It has an early 233MHz Pentium 2, and some very intersting sound, video, and A/V input solutions. I'm running wiindows 95 (I believe it is the 'B' version). I bought (from ebay) a 440LX chipset borad made by Intel (i think) for Gateway. I figured it was better because it used DIMMs instead of SIMMs and had an AGP slot. I swapped the boards out. No problem. Except for one: My CDROM Drive no longer works. I've checked and double checked and triple checked and quadruple checked and etc. the connections. It does not appear under 'My Computer' in windows, nor does it boot from bootable CD's, even though it is set up as the first boot device. The BIOS seems to recognise it, but nothing ever happes. The light comes on when I put a CD in, but nothing happens. I've tried different IDE cables, and moved it from Seccandary master to primary slave. Once, I was able to boot from a floppy and acces the cdrom as the c drive through DOS, but then I couldn't use the harddrive. Any ideas on how to fix this?

In addition, the power LED doesn't work...

I've seen brand new Shuttle slot 1 440BX Mobo's on Ebay, are thay any good? Should I replace this one?

Well since ur running win95, u most likely have to install the drive manually. As for the power led, check it the cable is in the correct pin orientation on the mobo. :burn:

-----Moved post to General Hardware-----

Are you using a 40-wire or 80-wire cable for this CDROM? If using an 80-wire, see if a 40-wire won't fix it. Has for me in the past and is worth a shot.

I forgot to mention that I switched back the boards, and the drive still didn't work, so I put the new board back in. I am using a 40-conductor cable. I tried the power LED in both pin orentations.

How would I manually install the drive?

You'll need to find a driver for that specific CDROM drive.

what brand of drive is it?
lite-on? sony? pioneer? mitsubishi? acer?

for kicks swap the channels..... maybe you have an issue there? also are you overclockerd? maybe that cd-rom doesn't like high FSB's

i have attached a multi cdr instal prog that works for 95 and dos, i used to use it a lot to get cdr in dos. just un zip it to a floppy fire up dos and go to a: and it is install.exe
install it and then see if you can access a cd in dos,
if so then its a win prob and not your MB, cdr
also you can run setup.exe, from win and it will detect and install your cdr, but first check it out in dos
its old freeware, hope it helps/works?

The system is not overclocked (maybe after I get it working properly...). DOS CD-ROM drivers are already installed, but I'll try these in a few days, when I find time. I switched the channels, but to no avail. One question: how will windows drivers help if the drive won't boot from bootable CDs, even as first boot device?

Thanks for the help (tho more is needed),

-Dan

It's a Mitsumi Min 13X/Max 32X IDE CD-ROM.

It mostly works now (thanks for the drivers, turd... that doesn't sound like a nice thing to say... oh well, it's the thought that counts.). It still will not boot from a cdrom and Autoplay will not work.
