Hey gang,
I just finished building a new desktop and want to put it to work folding. Did a lot of reading around here before building my first computer...great community!
AMD 955 BE X4
MSI NF980-G65
WIN 7 64 bit
I have installed the client using the guide in this forum. It appears to start and run fine, but when it gets to the part where it says "0 of 500000 processes complete" it just hangs there, and my computer crashes within two minutes.
So I put it to the experts, any obvious solutions come to mind
which guide?
psu? ram? overclocked or stock?
Welcome!

I used the "Windows SMPT2 install guide" at the top of this forum. I have a OCZ Mod Xstream 700 W PSU and 4 gigs of G. Skill DDR3-1600 PC3-12800.
The computer is not overclocked at the moment.
Thanks for your help!
if your computer crashes then I think that would be a hardware issue as it looks as tho it starts.
Could be a many of bios setting possible.

To check for a hardware issue, I ran Prime 95...failed in under two minutes. I suppose I'll head to the general hardware forum for you suggestions for sorting this out. The system has been running for three days...runs fine until it is really pushed. Thanks for the help.

Ok, I reset CMOS and things appear to be much more stable. Prime 95 will run now, and FAH SMP2 is also running without causing a crash.
I am now showing progress in the client window. Thanks again for suggesting I look at hardware, rather than the software I was running at the time.
As a High School Bio teacher, I am happy to be folding!

What hardware does the computer have and what temps is running at?

Yeah, Folding will really test the stability of your comp! When i built this rig, and over time when i found out about folding, it really put my OC'ing noob experience to test... I thought i was stable, at least 24 hour P95 stable (like the rest of OC'ers are concerned)... that was good for me. Once you fire up F@H, its a whole new ball game.
Welcome again! Great team you have joined, and LOTS of experienced users here to help you! Just dont ask me, i am a new-b to! Naw, i will help too, i will just run the chance that ChasR will chime in and correct me! Before Jan 17th, i had no CLUE what was going on, but now i am more seasoned, ALL THANKS to Team 32 Vets and Members!
:welcome: Welcome Teach!! Like Dark Bishop asked first thing you want to know when folding are what are your temps. If you need a monitor RealTemp or Core Temp work well.
70c and below are OK but 50c to 60c would be great@full load of the fah client. That would give you headroom to OC. Anything above 70c and its time for better cooling.

Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome! Folding certainly seems to be a great reliability test. I did bump the CPU up to 3.5ghz this afternoon, after the reset. Things seem stable at this speed, only time will tell. My temps are only at 45*C, and it has been folding for about 3 hours at 100%. I am using a H50 with two fans to cool the CPU. The huge amount of experience, and helpful atmosphere are why I decided to fold for T32. As for the other questions, the hardware is as follows:
AMD 955 BE X4
MSI NF980-G65
Antec 902
H50
OCZ ModXstream 700W
WD Caviar Black 750
4 G of G.SKill DDR3-1600 PC3-12800
Graphics Card will have to wait...the budget is gone!
I will work on a better OC as I learn more.
Thanks again for the warm welcome!
Teach you did a great job with that H50! My temps are in the middle 50's with the H50. This has become a heck of a popular cooler!:)
Have your mounting screws loosened at all after curing? Did you worry about stripping them or did they tighten up well?
Oh and if you copy and paste your specs into your sig...(Go into user cp) they will be with you all the time. We can admire your rig!!
