I've been running virus scans and spyware scans but can't seem to detect the cause of this rootkit. The message he gets is ""Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher Service terminated unexpectedly."
AFter that the system reboots. He's running Windows Vista with all current updates etc. and all AVG virus definitions are updated as well. Anyways i've run a HJT scan and not sure if any of the items are malware or what now. Was hoping someone can help me out. Thanks!

If he did have some virus or spyware that did cause this and it has been removed, then this is most likely file corruption. First i would boot into safe mode, open a command prompt window with admin capabilities and run chkdsk /f, then once that is done, run sfc /scannow. Be sure to have your windows disk at the ready if it finds anything. These processes can take a long time so be prepared to wait a while. sfc /scannow is used to run the windows file checker to compare all the system files and sometimes viruses do crazy things to system files and they get corrupted and this usually fixes the problem.

Try these suggestions out and report back.

Try running Malware Bytes. Download it and update it. Do a full scan and see if that picks up anything.

Boot to safemode and run malwarebytes full scan let us know what you find.

deleting things should be a last resort.

There could also be some dependency attached to the service from a virus. Run malwarebytes and spybot- search & destroy. If the problem still persists check the registry.

He just contacted me yesterday and said he gets random restarts, DLL error messages, and constant spamming of porn popups. I'll try and get an updated HJT log when i can get my hands on the computer.

edit: ran malware bytes in safe mode and found 39 objects. more than 1 rootkit was installed on this computer.
