View Full Version : Bad times all of a sudden
I've been running SETI on my current setup for quite some time now (not the command line version) and I've had the work units down to under 7Hrs each... Just this past week, they've been taking over 24Hrs each!
I haven't changed anything in my system.. no new hardware, no BIOS updates or changes, no system changes, etc..
Anyone know whay this would happen? I tried uninstalling/reinstalling SETI, but no change.
I ran some benchmarks and everything comes up exactly the same as before.. no change in memory speed, processor speed, etc..
Seems SETI is the only prg having a problem.
weird.

Check your power management, I heard that sometimes it has a habbit of turning on the shut down hard drive option.
Nope.. I have everything set to 'Never' (shutdown)
I thought maybe my CPU bought the farm from the OCing, but still seems SETI is the only affected prg. very strange indeed.

I don't remeber details, but with the server problems last week Berkeley said something about adding more work to the science to slow reults down- I don't know if it will be a client change or bigger wus..?
How many results have been long? If it is only a few you may have just gotten a string of low ar units at once.
I've only had 2 or three so far (in a row). It's really been just this past week. I was hoping it might be something along those lines (larger WUs). It still has the same freq. range (0-9765Hz) & length (107s), so I don't know.. Hopefully it's not me :) . I haven't seen anyone else having this problem though.. Anyone else have slow times all of a sudden?? Anyone?
Install SETISpy (http://personalwebs.myriad.net/roelof/setispy/). Then, check what the angle range (AR) of your WU is. Average is 0.4ish, and the lower the AR, the longer the WU...
Also, have you (or anyone else using the computer) been using your computer diffrent lately? Gaming can slow down the client quite a bit, as well as other CPU intensive apps.

When I game in UT I turn Seti off since that thing just lags the hell out of both programs so I need to close one to actually run one :)

Well I checked it & the AR is .417
I usually run SETI every nite while I'm asleep, with no other programs running (except F@H) .. It usually does 2 WUs each nite.. This past week, it only does 1/4 of 1 WU at nite.. I still can't understand why.
I also have SETI running on another PC (AMD K6-2 450Mhz). That one is & always was doing a WU in about 33Hrs.. The times on that machine haven't changed at all.. Just mine... Weird thing is, looking at both PCs, mine even 'looks' like it's going much faster than the 450Mhz machine... But now mine takes over 40Hrs/WU?? I don't get it.
How can you tell how much of the CPU resources are devoted to each program? I know NT had it in an option if you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL... I'm running F@H & SETI together.. maybe something gave F@H a higher priority then SETI or something?? I don't know.. I give up.
Wow.. Why didn't I do this sooner???
I uninstalled SETI completely (was running the screen saver version all this time)
I put on the command line version with SETISpy & SETIDriver...
Times are now under 3Hrs/WU.. damn, that's fast!
I've had a little competition with my sister for a while now.. She takes about 14Hrs/WU (INTEL 600+Mhz [not exactly sure what speed CPU she has])
I thought that 6Hrs/WU was good (what I've been getting)
I guess I'll catch up to her sooner than I thought!
(She has almost 780WUs in & I've got 610.. She's been running Seti for a few years now, so she has a lead on me)
Well.. Looks like that solved my problem.. thanks for the help anyways everybody.

Didn't know you were running the screen saver version. The SetiSpy is the best cache version of Seti period.
Your times look good and you'll be getting 8wu's by yourself a day thats pretty darn good.
