I just hada (possibly) stupid idea, and sorry if this belongs under cooling, I just figured,,,, anyway..

what about turning a Mountain Dew can into a water block? I mean, you could cut out the top circle, leaving the seam up top, and then solder a thin copper plate to the top. Then just punch 2 holes in it, add your tubes, and instant water block!

tell me if this is a bad idea...

oh, and what yould be the cheapest way to water-cool like that? bong?

that MIGHT work. when you do it, please post pics!!!!!!!

lol ya do it, and make sure you post pics!!!! you can do it!!!

ok, i guess....

now I just need to get hold of a few shims, and a water cooling system,,, but if i can bong it, it'd be cheaper.

um,,, how do I bong? linkage?

You mean like this (http://www.overclockers.com/articles389/)?

way to heavy!

how would you make it come into contact with the die

isnt the bottom curved up in to the can

Sounds more like a bong then a Water Block, however it would work, Its just a matter of how well.

This is cool.. post pics when it's done!

I actually decided to be a wuss about this water cooling thing, since it prolly wouldnt fit, it'd create a whirlpool effect. Also, i couldnt find a way to affix it there, soo...

I'll post my plan anyway, in case you guys wanna do it.

Take a can of Mountain dew. Drink it. Take a dremmel and a file, adn file down the top, so that the top seal is intact, but the metal thing where the tab is is completely out.

Then, solder a copper plate onto it, and place as many shims as needed onto the CPU so that the Die and case bridges are level with the shims. apply arctic silver and test fit on there, find a way to affix.

Punch 2 holes in it, and run tubing. Run it to your pump, etc.

Im just afraid it will fall off, and my processor will bake..

good idea. the step "solder a copper plate on to it" will be the challenge. thankfully ol' man has a great thread with pics here (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=49297) that shows how easy it is to solder. someone should try it and get some pics!

actually it's quite easy, just hold a blowtorch on the copper plate for about 30-90 seconds, and place the can on there. Then touch the joint with solder a few times. Wait to cool, or pick it up with tongs and drop it in some water to cool.

simple realy...

If I can find a way to mount it safely i will give it a shot, i just dont want my proc to bake.

Why not just make the copper plate big enough that you can use the 4-hole mount? That would definetly make for a ghetto cooling setup!

hmmm,,, alright, next can I get of a Mountain Dew (not the caffine free crap) I'll try to make the block.

oh, and is there any way I could just fill it with water and be done with it, or would that be stupid?

JFettig

well the way you put it, it would be stupid...becasue the water would heat up...and well, heat up some more... and barely cool from the can....you need water running thru it...and i got a better idea instead of cutting the can.... ill make a pic

basicly, on the bottom of a can there is that concave thing,
and put the tubing into that that would cool the copper and the copper would cool the cpu...

the bottom of the can

cool....

now all I need as a pump and a car radiator matrix and I got myself some water cooling...

unfortunately, i tried moving my FSB form 133 to 137 through CPUFSB, and I got plagued with errors....

a lousy 30 mhz and I get unstable...

what mobo do you have?
do you have your multiplier unlocked?

im testing my fan adapter, otherwize i got my 800 to 1050 with 10xmulti and 105fsb

hehe i just made a direct heatspreader watercooler for my k6-2 computer! hehehe
but all i need is to put the fittings on it,

can i soldier the can to the copper tubing? or doesnt that work?

Legionnaire

K7s5A, multiplyer locked but I can do the pencil trick today, im not in school, and will be bored waitign for DOD2.0

If I can just change my multiplyer, would that be better than OCing the whole dang system?

EDIT: oh, you did it with the can? cool! lemme know how it works.

Legionnaire

yes, you can prollly solder it to the tubing, just hold ablowtorch on the copper and a little bit on the aluminum, put it on (be sure to wear protective gloves), and touch the solder onto it.

oh, but be sure to put the flux on first.

JFettig
02-06-02, 03:36 PM
yea i know how to soldier copper, but the aluminum doesnt soldier that good as i have heard, so i just used JBweld

thats what i got, its either gonna be direct die or im gonna put a copper plate on the bottom
its made of a pop can but the whole thing isnt there, but you could just leave the rest on like that and make the tubes go strait up out of the can

Legionnaire

that'd be awkward welding those in though.

Try it out, see how it works!

JFettig
02-09-02, 11:25 PM
oop i am tryin it out!
im running 800@1050 @34c on my watercooling system!
the block looks just like the one i posted above but with a copper plate on the bottom JBwelded...

JFettig
02-09-02, 11:28 PM
id do it that way with the whole popcan on it if i had a 2x3 peice of copper for the bottom.... but otherwize i dont have any good mounting....
