well its time for me to get a new hard drive.

its between the...

(1)MAXTOR EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # 6L040J2 40GB 7200RPM

or

(1)IBM EIDE HARD DRIVE 40GB 7200RPM MODEL # IC35L040AVER07, PART# 07N6654 - 60GXP

or

(2)Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 20GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA 100 6L020J1 Model D740X EIDE Hard Drive

which one do you guys think is better. maxtor and IBM have had similar reviews.

Some member was just complaining the other day about the noise of his new IBM 7200 RPM drive.

Flame away, but I personally like Maxtor. Mine are super quiet.

I really have no preference between the two. I have a crapload of Maxtors and one IBM. None have given me the slightest problem.

Speeds are comparable as are performance and reliability, in my opinion. Both have sustained high bus speeds so far as well without issue.

With all these screaming Deltas and 120mm fans in this room...I haven't heard what a hard drive sounds like in over a year so I can't comment on noise.

I find my ibm 60gxp to be very quiet, I can't event tell it's running without looking at the light.
I don't have any delta fans.

I vote #2 or 3.

i was thinkin that the first maxtor would be a good advantage for an upgrade because it already supports ATA 133. So later one i would already have this speed and not have to worry about again upgrading

what do you guys think?

133 is going to be nice. I would go with that one.

As long as you realize that the sustaind thoughput on the fastests IDE drives hasn't even reached ATA 66 level yet.

I my self am looking at the maxtor d740x 60 gig myself.

I have had 2 IBM drives, and so has my friend. They are loud and dont seem to last very long compared to my Maxtors and Western Digitals. All but one IBM drive has gone kaput, and the one remaining drive sounds like it is spinning in gravel. I am not partial to one brand or another, but my experience with IBMs speaks for itself. Regardless of the new ATA-133 technology (IDE technology is getting old, the new tech to look for is Serial-ATA), I would still go with the Maxtor drive over any IBM.

i wonder why isnt seagate so popular in the forums. it makes very good hard drives.

Check out the 60 gig Maxtor D740X #6L060L3 The 2nd L in the part number denotes Dynamic Fluid Bearings. A J would denote BB.
I just ordered mine from www.a2zcomp.com for $129. The Fluid bearing models are fairly difficult to find in stock.
Not sure if 133mhz drives will catch on, since serial ATA seems to be in the works.

EDIT: a2zcomputers has a very poor reseller rating. Nummy me didn't check it out before the purchase:eek: Their return policy is terrible. Note that all their items are "Special Order" items. No refund on "Special Order" items.

Stay away from that noise IBM. I like the max and the WD, but right now I'm running 2 WD (20gig, 40gig) and I'm about to purchase a 100gig WD. (all 7200)

I like the utilities you can download from the WD site to help with formating their drives and trouble shooting them.

Good choice. The other Maxtor you were thinking about is really a Quantum. Their IDE harddrive division was taken over by Maxtor about a year or so ago. They kept the same maufacturing process, and just make top plates for the drives that have "Maxtor" written on them instead of "Quantum".
