I'm wondering if when you're trying to burn an audio cd with nero, does it make temp .wav files. and then use the .wav files to burn the cd...

It converts it to CDDA for audio CDs. It must have a temp file hidden someplace. It doesnt sound good IMO so I use MusicMatch to burn audio CDs. One thing that I have noticed is that if you burn at only 4X it seems to work on any kind of player.
