ok first of i would like to say i never o/c this comp
i built a 1.4athalon 266fsb for a friend it has a generic mobo [sis k7somthen] when i built it 4months ago i did not know why it was running at 1050mhz but today when i went to his house i new it was cuz it was set to 100mhz fsb so i used the bios [was very resticed on settings can only change cpu fsb 100or133 and sdram 100or133] so i changed both from 100 to 133 like it was supposed to be [ram is 133 also] any way i rebooted and every thing was perfect 1400mhz booted win98 ran sysoft sandra cpu bench beat p41.5 ran the secont cpu test kicked the p41.5's @$$ then ran the mem test and the screen went black poped open the case and thought id juz reset the bios [cuz it was not booting] reset it nothing. then secont try i thought to sniff around a lil and smelled the worst thing u could posibly want to smell in ur friends comp........... burnt cpu
any way the every thing is 4months old but frys electronics [they sold us the mobo cpu combo] says its past 30days so talk to manufacturer and the warrenty says talk to distributer if less than 3years old.
so what i want to know is whos fault is it and who is gona pay for what
im thinkin its the mobo cuz i juz did what the amd manual said to do
any way i need some opinions/help cuz well he does not have a comp and it needs to be fixed asap
a have already emailed amd with the problem
plz help:(

Sounds like it could be an ECS K7S5A motherboard.
What kind of cooling were you using, heatsink, etc?

it was a cheapo heatsink fan that came in the oll 1.4 w realy crappy mobo and fan packages u know
as for the mobo its realy wierd the manual and cd that came w it never say who the manufacturer is the only thing i see is sis K7S5A i think thats right...

Hey, a few monthes ago I ordered a motherboard combo...It conatined an ECS K7S5A(like yours) And a 1.4 Athlon Tbird....I had the exact same problem as you but I WAS abole to fix it....And I really find it hard to believe that the cpu is fryed unless you did not have the hs\f on correctly. BUt any way....There is too options for you. 1. Buy a bigger psu 2. Close the L1 bridges on the CPU, to get the vlotage up higher....Also..when the K7S5A motherboard runs at 133 bus, with not enought voltage pumping to the processor you will also get registry errors out the ass.
GOOD LUCK man Im shure you can fix it
P.S. ALMOST EVERY K7S5A Motherboard does this:confused:

well i cant do any mods like that cuz its not mine and i dont want to oc or mods or anything cuz its not my comp
as for hsfan mounted correctly im pretty shure i its all the way on it had one of those peel of sticky tabs [aka pos] on the hs and its one of those REALY CRAMPED Cases with the ps covering most of the hs/fan so i think its likely that it got fried.... grrrrr
im getting absalutely no activity when the ps turns on [very bad :( ] so sombody is gona have to cover the warrenty cuz i followed the cpu instructions
is it posible to oc on that mobo?? i did not think it was

the ecsk7s5a is actually a pretty good board from what i've heard, although it is limited in oc'ability. gotta ditch that case with the psu in front of the hsf. i had one and my load temps were in the mid 50's!!! for under a hundred your friend can get a case with a better design for airflow and i't's definatly worth it. i also seriously doubt that your cpu could be fried. i'd try reseating the ram or if there's more than one stick remove all but 1. (using pc 133?) that board will support ddr as well. make sure the ram is in the right slot... could you give us an idea what the temps were before this happened? did you check when you set up the system? anyway. i'd unplug the psu. remove the battery from the mobo and let it sit for awhile. (this is if clear cmos didn't work) unplug everything but hdd, vid card, and ram... see if you can get a post like that.....
let us know how you get on. i'm sure it can be fixed. highly unlikely to fry a cpu by running the correct fsb......

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. If the CPU is dead, don't the cases fans and PSU fan still come on? I had a dead P3 a few months back, but I forget exactly what did and did not run.
If I'm right about the above, I'd look at PSU first and mobo second (only because it's cheaper to try a new PSU).

well i did check temps b4 i changed bus speed in the upper 40z so i guess thats not good the kid im doen this for has no desire to spend money on this computer his parents spent the 500 bucks on his bday and new cases and psu are not an option unless there is no other posiblility
thx for the suggestions ill try all the things u listed the mem is 133 1 stick 512mb i already tryed resetting the bios so ill try removing some components next it will take me a couple days to get back on the comp cuz its at his house
keep u guyz posted more suggestions too
plz
thx guyz err and grlz

I don't think that the cpu would burn up unless the HSF was on incorrectly.
I would add that connecting the L1 bridges will do nothing for you with regard to voltage. They merely unlock the multiplier, and with that mobo, this would be of no use.

i installed it juz like all the others ive ever installed
the clips were on correctly
what else could posibly be wrong incorrect about the hsfan

is there any way to tell if i mounted the hsfan incorrectly besides if i had it would have fryed like 20secounds after i turned it on in the first place right??
let me know
thx :eh?:

I.M.H.O.
The cpu went "POOF"....
Fault belong to the heatsink/fan....
NEVER SKIMP ON HEATSINK/FAN...
and NEVER use the pad that comes with lots of them!
H.S. compound can be bought at radioshack CHEAP...
Hold out for Arctic silver if you can get some...otherwise use the white stuff.
Board is most likely fine....
Sorry for the bad news...but.....
GOOD LUCK!!!!

I wouldent say they HAVE to because my roomate chipped his core installing a AMD reccomended heatsink Exactly the way the instructions list (Were both techs, theyre is no user error here) And they basically said. Oh.. well screw you. Have a nice day. So hes gotta get a new one.
We both have problems with manufact actually.
Do you have another system you can check to make sure the CPU is bad? Thats usually the easiest way to test is to put into another sytstem.

Please check the power supply you have. The K7S5A sucks a lot of power. I'd been running a duron 800 on another board with a 200W power supply. On the K7S5A, a 200W or 250W was not enough... It needed a 300W. I don't know if the power supply could have caused it, but it is possible.
Also, the 1.4GHz T-bird is the hottest processor ever. The heatsinks approved for it are barely adequate for cooling it. Get something better: check the overclockers articles. Good luck!

no kidding! this explains why he fried the cpu when he ran it at 1.4GHz from 1050MHz. the extra heat killed the cpu in a few minutes. even my brother's 950MHz T-bird runs like 50 centigrates or 120 frahienit with clynder heatsink and fan. its almost too hot to touch!

Almost too hot to touch? That's over 50C then. Probably more like 65-70! GET A NEW HEATSINK NOW!!!!! Thermal diodes aren't accurate. If you get the new heatsink, I can almost guarantee increased stability.

its actually my brothers. ill be building my own

Well, get your brother a new heatsink while you're at it. You'll save him a lot of computer pains, and his machine will have a longer life. Make him pay for it, if you want.
