Hey, I currently have a duron 700 mhz (not o/c) I am planning on getting a 1.2 ghz celeron, and selling my current mobo/cpu combo. I was wondering what would be the best motherboard to buy to overclock, and is there a certain stepping i should look for in a good overclocker 1.2 ghz chip, cause i would love to overclock it to lik 1.5 or 1.7 ghz. Also can u tell me an online selle that would send me the best overclocker motherboard here in canada?

Thanks for your help
~Therock911@

Also if you want specs on my current set up its:
(1) Duron 700 chip not o/c
(1) Fic Az11e motherboard
(1) stick of pc133 256 mb sdram
(1) 100 gig 7200 rpm wd drive
(1) 4x4x24 mitsumi cdrw
(1) 2xAGP Powercolour Voodoo3 3000 w/tv
(Pretty crappy but it gets the job done)

Ooh and one more thing, will I notice a big difference right away when i switch from 700 mhz duron to a 1.2 ghz celeron?

Well, since software world hasn't caught up to the extreme advances in the hardware world, my guess is that the difference won't be that noticeable unless you're doing tons of compiling or SETI for Folding or stuff like that.

The Tualerons seem to be doing quite well up to 1.5... but past that it's shaky. It looks as though the Philippines retail boxed chips are doing great now, but when looking in the CPU database the Malays are also doing well.

As far as mobos go, I'd look for the Gigabyte GA-60XET or GA-60XET-C motherboard. I'd say that one's probably the best right now, it uses PLL dividers which give you 1/5 and 1/6 dividers, allowing you to keep your PCI bus in spec at much higher FSBs. If you can't find one of those, look for an Abit ST6, they're also doing quite well, but lack the PLL dividers.

Is it true that you can use these celerons without a fan? just with the heat sink? if so that must be sooooooooo quiet. If it does I would leave it without a fan and the heck with one, cause right now my damn durons fan is soooooooooooooooo loud! lemme know if this is true or not?

what i meant was if you can run it without a fan, only requiring a hs, then the heck with overclocking it, i will have it 1.2 ghz if it runs without a fan!

trust me...you need a fan, no matter how loud or quiet it is...I would give up a few dB's for a few degrees...

I'd tend to agree with that. Even if it's a quiet one, running a processor with a fan is much safer, even if you're not planning to OC.

You definitely need a good fan and HS for these tulatin chips. They run hotter then my old PIII 733 chip.

As for a motherboard it's a even toss up between the Abit ST6 and the Gigabyte board. Both have the pci divisors and are pretty much equals in every aspect. I had a gigabyte 60xm7e board before and didn’t care for it. My abit is my new best friend. I had an easy time doing my overclock with it and find the Abit board very easy to use. Check out my sig to see where i'm at now with my overclock. and notice the temps with water cooling.

For most 1.2 celes 1.5 seems to reachable if pci/agp speeds allow it.

In my opinion if you're going for 1.6 or more, you'll need to test at least 2 different celes... no1 has yet found a cpu-code that would do 100% sure 1.6. So you need some testing or you have to wait for newer steppings.

Well jazz is correct do you really see a point into switching for good purposes like gaming or seti/folding?

If there is then I would recommend you to this rig:

Gigabyte 60 XET/XET-C
Celeron Tualatin 1.0a
Millennium Glacitor II

With that you should get easily to 150fsb with good ram that can do at least PC150 and a good PSU which can take the juice to boot!

You can run a Tualeron 1.2 without a fan if you have a really good HS or if you can run it at a lower voltage than default.

Look at this thread (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62205) .

I've also seen a post at a Japanese BBS Forum for Silent PC (yes, such a forum does exist) saying that the poster succeeded in running Tualeron 1.0A fanless at 1.33!! The huge fanless heatsink the guy was using, however, is not available in the U.S., unfortunately.

So if you have a HS such as Alpha PEP66 or PAL6035, and if you use ASIII, I speculate you might be able to run your Tualeron 1.2 fanless, of course at default speed. Let me add that your case has to have a good cooling in this case. Alternatively, if you can run yours at 1.3v, you have a really good chance to run it fanless. I myself am going to buy Tualeron and try running it fanless in a couple of weeks.

Even if you can't run it fanless, I'm sure you can use an extremely quiet fan. Even with Thunderbird 800MHz, which consumes 13W more than Tualeron, I'm running my CPU fan at 5v (8.75CFM & 11-12 dBA, estimated), with Alpha PAL6035. So with Tualeron, if you use HS as good as PAL6035, you can surely make your CPU fan inaudible (by running a quiet fan at 5v).

YMMV, but if you are for a quiet PC, it's worth a try to run Tualeron fanless, IMHO.

what brand of pc 133 is the best for overclocking? cause i bought this 256mb stick of ram from a local shop, and dont know what brand it is. also, how came ram prices go up and down so much?

1. Mushkin, Corsair, Crucial, and Kingmax.

2. I don't think nobody can give a satisfactory explanation about RAM price fluctuations. Risking oversimplification, let me say that it's partly because of market mechanism (S&D) and partly because of the intention and strategy of a small number of big DRAM manufacturers.

GA-6OEXTC seems to be fine for both overclocking and downvolting for a fanless operation.

As regards heatsink, I'd recommend Alpha PEP66, PAL6035, or Swiftech MCXC370 (not MCX370). Whether you go for overclocking or silencing, you can't go wrong with those top performers.

I'm with Ausone on just about everything he said. Mushkin can only be acquired on their website, www.mushkin.com (http://www.mushkin.com) and Crucial (http://www.crucial.com) is the same.

I'll second his heatsink recommendations-- I have a PEP-66 on a 72w peltier and it's a wonderful heatsink. I'd also still go with the Gigabyte GA60XET-C. I've also seen these boards at www.axiontech.com (http://www.axiontech.com).
