I have an error occurred / degraded in BIOS and the Intel Matrix shows an error (red x) also. See pic.

So, I have never encountered this and have ordered a new HDD. I am willing to test and keep the new HDd as a spare but could use your suggestions on testing the marked drive and how to replace it.

Is it as easy as shutting down, swapping out and starting up?
Or do I need to go into BIOS and take it out of the ARRAY first?

Thanks for any help.

I would image the drive ASAP. This way if the other drive takes a crap, you'll at least have a backup!!!!

After you do that, shut down and remove the drive... Check all connections. It is very possible its just a lose or bad connection, and it will come back online...

Thanks, I tried the cables, then removed the good one and it would not boot, BIOS reporting it as failed and not bootable.

So I'll be imaging the good one now.

But after this is what I need to prepare for. Just plug-in the new identical drive and it will format the new drive and rebuild the ARRAY?

It seems I have got into trouble here before in another PC with a Gigabyte board where it wanted to make a new ARRAY wiping all data.

Thanks

ya plug in new drive and it should rebuild automatically.

OK Guys,

Tell me if this looks and sounds like it should. Pic below.

I pull the drive out of the bag and plug her in and boot.

No more error on the BIOS but it was not listed as a member but continued to boot.

When I get into windows and look at the Intel Matrix it shows a single drive in the list and a red splat indicating a drive is missing.

I then do an Action to rebuild and make the selection and such and hit go.

In the blink of an eye it adds the new drive to the list on the correct port but still shows the missing drive red splat now moved down to a 3rd line.

I boot and note the BIOS shows it as a RAID member now and let it continue to boot. I never went into the BIOS raid setup or paused the boot.
I'm like - Huh. That FAST! It took more than an hour to back up. 300GB of data rebuilt just like THAT!

When she comes back up I open the Intel Matrix and the ARRAY is still there and splat is still there, BUT, I can hear the HDD's grinding away and they still are going on 30 minutes now. Is this the rebuilding process taking place?

Don't forget to RMA that original drive. At the very least you can sell it here in the classifieds.

Heh! It's more than a year old so no more RMA. It's dead.

WoW! Thanks, I had no idea. I have never had a HDD go bad in all my years so I'm not up to speed I guess..

Thanks Again Guys,

The RMA process is a BREEZE. When "tachi1247" & "Joeteck" commented on the RMA stuff I had in mind a real PITA process but the label is on the box now.

Also, after my last post reporting the splat and the HDD's grinding when I checked back later I see it's all good to go. See pic.

So now I will have a reserve unit in the works.

A RAID1 Testimonial...........

I am a photographer and have more external backup drives, but having the OS setup like this keeps me working. The 640 Black HDD's speed runs Photoshop like a borrowed mule.
If I had just relied on my external devices for backups and had the OS on a single drive @ failure I would have had to fall WAY behind in my work flow. Having to reload it ALL and the likes of Photoshop and all the other stuff and their updates, ARGGG! And if you loose Photoshop like this without deactivating it first ARRRGH! Again!
So only one failed and I continued business as usual while replacing the hardware.

Hi Guys,
I sent the 640GB back to WD and got a WD1001FALS back. In less than 10 days.

Thanks, would you pull the jumper that enables the SSC?
It came installed/enabled. I'm not going to run it in RAID.
