The quicktime player does various formats.

Have you tried 2X on the AGP? That often fixed my problem. Did the same thing to me with a GeForce though (can't remember if it happened with my ViVo or not). Anything that displayed MPEGs or AVIs locked me hard instantly. Even if it was just a preview over in the info column in Explorer. Never a problem in games though.

Seems it had something to do with the AGP driver installation from the 4-in-1s. It was always picky about when I installed them as in before/after the video card drivers. I could never figure out what the correct procedure was on it though. Out of about 10-15 Win2K installs I had the lockup problem 5-7 times...close, but not quite, half the time.

Might want to try downloading the AGP miniport driver as a separate download then install it individually if you haven't already tried it. I know I drove myself mad looking for a fix.

Almost forgot...are fast writes enabled? Never got them to work on any VIA chipset board without lockups with either card...especially my VP6. Try disabling that if you've tried everything else.

thanks for trying to help jon but i already had the agp set at 2x and fast write should be disabled. I'm going to try some other players. might even go with flounders suggestion and try out quicktime again.

what weird is when i play games the movies work fine. just a media player thing. obviously its not an issue with anything else because i have about 11 tasks going now on the vp6 with no problems including two folding clients. dual processors can be nice :)

quicktime seems to hate me as well. :(

ahhh. its kind of frustrating. atleast i'm not the only one with this problem. if i turn off all other apps then movies are less likely to freeze but it still stinks.

ok i might have a fix. i downloaded a pci latency file fix that is suppose to fix the freezing video for radeon cards. not sure. let you know.

right now my new cd burner doesnt want to burn or install the burning software so im about ready to kick some ass over at plextor. reads cds fine but it wont burn.

maybe a irq conflict? u know, sound, video tryin to talk to the cpu at once. Just a thought.

This might sound funny but do u have 2 diff version of divx installed maybe?
Happened to me once,, I installed 3.1 and then installed 4.2 thinking it would overwrite the old, but it didn't and would make my comp lock up when ever I watched a movie... :P
Probably way off but worth a shot :P
